2-22-01Blend ice cubes into shaved ice and allow the children to eat and play with the ice. Read a book about snow or winter.
2-22-01Place a bag of ice into your water table and you have a great sensory for the winter. Add small shovels and cups.
2-12-01Put shaving cream on your tables and allow the children to use their fingers to make designs in this instant snow. The children have lots of fun and the shaving cream instantly cleans your tables!
2-9-01For the days that are just too cold to take your little ones outside...bring the outside inside! I bring in snow to use in our water table. Toddlers just love it. We take their shirts, shoes and socks off (leave on pants) and put paint smocks on them. I add dishes, cups, cars, etc. in the snow to help with dramatic play. Make sure there are enough warm towels to dry their cold hands with. They love to get dry and then come back for more.
2-9-01Have children build a snowman out of shaving cream. Use tiny pieces of dried leaves and sticks for the features. Build it outside on a sheet on construction paper and when they are done, talk to them about how snow melts. Let them "smoosh" Mr. snowman down and finger-paint with his remains on the black construction paper.
Date: 2-9-01Put snow in the sensory table, then put water and food coloring into inexpensive plant misters. The toddlers can practice fine motor skills by misting the snow with different colors.
2-9-01Living in the south, our children do not have the opportunity to play in the snow. I used the packaging popcorn or peanuts from all of the holiday delivery boxes instead. I dumped the popcorn on the floor and brought in the buckets and shovels from the sand area for the children to play with. Later we used them to make pictures with glue and blue construction paper. The children loved this. It can also be done with cotton balls.
2-9-01Based on the same premise as Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? I made a flannel board with a snowman. I have the snowman body and then I add a red scarf, an orange carrot, two black eyes, a black hat, two brown sticks for arms, blue mittens, a broomstick, and a cup of hot chocolate. I say," Snowman, Snowman, what do you see?" "I see an orange carrot standing next to me." then we place the carrot on the snowman. I continue with all the pieces until the snowman is complete assembled. The children love to say this with me.
Date: 1-24-01Have the children paste a oval shaped piece of tinfoil on to a piece of paper. Then have them glue cotton around the outside of it. Next have them paste on a small black circle on to the tin foil towards the top. Then they paste goldfish crackers on to the tinfoil. This will form an ice pond. Then have them paste on a craft stick and a piece of yarn. This will resemble a fishing pole.
Date: 1-24-01Instant mashed potato flakes in the sensory table make a wonderful simulated snow without the cold, or mess.
Date: 1-24-01Create a mixture of 1\2 glue and 1\2 shaving cream. Using paint brushes let the children "paint" snowmen on a piece of construction paper. You can also let them decorate their snowmen with buttons.
