Developing small manipulative activities for young toddlers has always been a hobby of mine. This activity can be used for almost any theme by just changing the the objects to match your theme. This activity is called hands on/ hands off. You need a white sheet of tag board, four sheets of multicultural paper, glue, scissors, clear contact paper, four sheets different colored construction paper, & Velcro. On the white sheet of tag board glue on 4 sets of hands (cut from the multicultural paper). I used my hands as patterns so that the children would have a bigger surface area to work with. Next contact tag board. With the four pieces of colored paper you need to cut out mittens slightly larger than the hands and contact. On the back of the gloves apply the rough side of the Velcro. On the hands glued onto the tag board apply the soft side of the Velcro. I make my Velcro pieces about 2 inches long and apply them so that they make a letter T when placed on top of each other. Then I secure the tag board to the wall. This gives the children an opportunity to be able to pull off and place by on all by themselves.

Spread out one match to several pairs of mittens, keep the other matches in a brown bag. As the kids are exploring the matches you have spread out, pull a mitten out of the bag and see if they can find it's mate. Help them at first if they are very young. They may pick up this concept faster than you think. this will work on concepts such as color, size and "the same". A good follow up may be reading or singing about the kittens who lost their mittens or any mitten story.

Each child gets two or three single mittens in various colors - ie made from felt, then pull one color at a time and the child who has the matching mitten gets to come up to the felt board and make the matching pair complete! It's a very interactive way to reinforce colors.

Freeze and Melt

Find two things that represent cold and warm to the child such as sun and snowflake. Play some music while you dance around with your child. Hold up the sun and slowly crouch down and 'melt'. Hold up the snowflake and dance around again. You can also signal freezing by stopping the music.

Gather a bag of mittens and gloves. After telling the story of the Three Little Kittens, have the children match the glove and mittens and hang them on a clothes line.

We make a circle, holding hands, just as we do for Ring Around the Rosy. Using the same tune we chant; 

Ring around the Ice, 
Skating is so nice, slipping, sliding, 
We all Fall Down!!!

We sit on the floor in a circle and all hold the ends of a large sheet. (parachute is too big for these little ones) Then I put on some bouncy music and we put white cotton balls into the center of the sheet sheet and bounce them up and down. We pretend it is snow.

Read "Froggy Gets Dressed" by Jonathan London...provide a cutout of a frog (the "goofier" looking the better) and cutouts of Froggy's clothes (boots, socks, jacket, hat, scarf etc)...discuss with the children the concepts of: 

1)That frogs usually hibernate in the winter 
2)Order (what goes on first, second, etc) 
3). Winter clothing. Give them the cutouts and let them create....(I was surprised at how many 2 & 3 year olds were able to "dress" froggy in the right order. 

They really enjoyed the book (read with lots of expression) and this project.
