2-22-01On the sidewalk, draw 2 lines, about a meter apart. This will be "the river". Between the 2 lines (which don't have to be straight!), lay many different shapes, which the children will use to cross the river. Call out a shape, and each child has to "cross the river" by stepping only on that shape.
2-12-01In my 2 year old class we love to search the class room for shapes. The children can identify the shapes they have learned on their own, while having a fun shape hunt!
2-9-01We do the shape hokey-pokey with our older toddlers. We make different shapes in different colors and than sing, 'Put your red circle in, take your red circle out, put your red circle in and shake it all about." They love this and its great for color and shape recognition. Also, helps with following directions.
2-9-01Trace the basic geometric shapes on to the back of thin sandpaper. Cut the shapes out and glue them on to tag board. Let the child FEEL the shapes as you teach their names.
2-9-01While playing with the parachute, I like to cut shapes out of construction paper. I throw them in he middle and we try and get them to all fly out. The children then pick them up and throw them back in, and we repeat the play activity over and over. I make sure I cut double the number of shapes as there are children in the group, so each child can pick up at least one to toss back in. I use what ever shape is currently under discussion that day. Or I will use seasonal shapes, like pumpkins, apples, snowmen, hearts, shamrocks, etc.
2-9-01Cut the shape you are doing from construction paper laminate it with clear contact paper and buy magnetic stripping. Place a piece of magnetic strip on the back of the shape and let the children place it on a metal surface. For example: cookie sheets, closet, refrigerator, etc.
2-9-01Cut out shapes from poster board or even construction paper will do. If you do it in different colors, then it can be 2 lessons in one! Tape them up to a wall or garage and have the kids throw bean bags at the shape you call out. If your kids are older, then you can even cut out letters. Kids love to throw things so they should love this activity!
2-9-01I teach 2 year olds, and for my book and listening center I made shape pillows. yellow triangle, green square, blue rectangle, and red circle. we use them a lot all year, but especially during color and shape themes. we will put them in the floor, make a circle around them and play musical shapes. when the music stops I call out who is sitting on a yellow triangle, etc.
