2-12-01Not all toddlers know how to treat pets, so I began a pet theme for my daughter and her friends (1-3 year olds) Using the computer I printed out (completely in black and white) a "living room scene" for each toddler. A window, a door, a couch, and an end table. I also printed out a page of pets including a dog, cat, bird, fish, hamster etc. (again one for each child). I let the kids color the pet page first. Then while they colored their living rooms I cut the pets out. Finally they got to glue the pets onto their living rooms. The kicker is that I spent the entire time talking about the nice things we do for pets (feeding, watering). Also the things we never do to our pets. (pinching, squeezing)---magazine cut outs of animals also work nicely.
2-12-01To continue a pet theme for toddlers, I printed from the computer, in black and white, pages of different pets (1 large pet per page). Then I printed a separate page of small black and white pictures of pet accessories. For instance the Dog's corresponding page had a bowl, dog bone, brush, and pillow/bed. The kids got to color and paste the "doggies special things" onto the page with the dog they colored. Talking about does and don'ts for doggies all the while. (i.e.. "we like to hug doggies but we never squeeze them or pull their tails)- For a nice touch a small real doggie biscuit makes a fun added glue on. Also add variety by using paints or markers instead of crayons for each.
