For our leaf unit in the fall I wanted them to touch leaves, but not eat them and the leaves always make a big mess on the floor. I took old pillowcases and stuffed them full of leaves then tied them shut. If there still were some openings I safety pinned them shut. I gave each child a pillowcase and let them squish, crinkle, bend or whatever they wanted to do with it.  The toddlers loved it and it wasn't as messy.  I used this when I was in school and the supervising teacher just loved the idea.
