2-22-01A lovely personal wreath idea: trace children's hands onto green paper and cut out a whole stack of them, them overlap them in a circle and decorate. A nice sleigh can be made by taking a small box or milk carton, cutting the top edge down on a slope to make the carriage part, and poking candy canes through both sides for the sleigh's runners. This can then be filled with nice little candies like peppermints or mini-candy canes as a small but sweet gift. Clothespin reindeer - paint the clothespin brown, add eyes and a nose. These can be wiggly eyes and small red pompoms if you have a big budget, or wither painted or cut from construction paper for the rest of us. Then take a beige pipe cleaner, curl it a bit, and string it through the clothespin spring to make antlers.
2-12-01I have worked with toddler age children for 14 year's and would like to share an idea that I found to be one of the most rewarding. My partner and I had invited the parents to come to our class to have a "Christmas lunch" with their child. We sent the invitation's out a few week's in advance, and in the mean time we put together a short narrated Christmas play. Together we let the children help paint a background of star's and animal's for a nativity scene. A few day's before the parent's came, we video taped the nativity scene, as one teacher read a short story, the other teacher helped the children find their place until all had found place at the manger scene that we had created. The children loved this, and all were involved, as we had animal's, the wise men, Mary and Joseph, etc. The day the parent's came to have lunch we put the video in as their Christmas present! It was a great success. The parent's were so thrilled that we had to make several copies of the video. Please note we did get permission to tape the children before we made the video. As the parent's watched the video, several Mom's and Dad's could not keep from shedding tear's of joy at their child's accomplishment, as well as that tender moment that the Christ child brought into each of their lives. It took a little bit of effort to do this, but the result's were well worth the time.
2-9-01Give each child a Styrofoam cup to decorate with markers or something that doesn't require a lot of pushing to be visible.......the new paint pens work VERY well. After the child decorates the cup, attach a Styrofoam ball to the top by pushing a gold pipe cleaner with a knot on one end through the cup.......through the ball......then use the extra amount to fashion a halo above the ball. Then the children can glue on some yarn hair, push in some colored pins to make eyes, attach a sequin for a nose, paint/draw a smile. Glue on a pre-cut heart to the back to make the wings for your angel. You can write on the heart "Merry Christmas from (Name)" and add a date. Will be a wonderful keepsake for years to come.
2-9-01Make a Christmas tree and reinforce shapes and colors. Cut out a large green triangle for the tree, a brown rectangle for the bark, and various colored shapes for the ornaments. Talk about the different shapes and colors. Show them how to glue on the rectangle, then let them have fun gluing on the ornaments.
