Give each toddler a coffee filter, then give them different pieces of colored tissue paper. Have the children use paint brushes to brush water over the tissue paper. The tissue paper will bleed through. Tie the center with a pipe cleaner forming into butterfly with antennas. Hang to display by a window unit. The children like seeing their butterflies blowing to and from.

Have the toddlers take off their shoes and socks, having them stand on a piece of paper with their feet together. Trace around them, then let the children decorate with stickers, glitter, etc. Cut out the butterfly shapes and attach pipe cleaners for antennas. They make wonderful bulletin board pieces.

For the butterfly theme, we cut large butterfly shapes out of construction paper. Then, cover the back of the paper with contact paper. Allow the children to place brightly colored tissue paper to the sticky part of the contact paper. hang in the window as they make wonderful sun catchers!

Baggie butterfly

Using a sandwich size plastic baggie, child fills with cut up scraps of tissue paper, glitter, ribbon etc. Scrunch the middle and wrap pipe cleaner around it leaving enough for antenna. Great for the "reluctant to get hands messy child".

Butterfly

I cut out butterfly shapes, and cut out antennas separately. I had the children use the liquid bingo markers to add spots to the butterfly. I also had the children use glue sticks to attach the antennas to the top of the butterfly. The toddlers will need help with the antennas. Watch so that no child puts the bingo dabbers into their mouth.

Fold a piece of white construction paper in half and cut into the shape of a butterfly. Place dots of paint on paper and fold and let the children rub the paper. Unfold and you have a beautiful butterfly.

Butterflies: have children draw on coffee filters with water-based markers. Then spray these lightly with water, which will make the colors run together for a great effect. hang to dry - you can read a couple of butterfly books in this time - before wrapping a pipe cleaner around the middle to create two wings. Leave enough pipe cleaner to make antennae out of the end!
