idea

Take each child and assign them their own special day every child. This is a good thing to do because not all children have a birthday during the school year to celebrate. Have the child bring in a special thing from home to show and tell about. They bring in a family picture or a picture of each person in their family and tell who they are. They get to help out by being line leader, help set up groups, help set the table for lunch. They get to wear a special crown made out of construction paper with their name on it. They get to other things also, but it is very fun for them to do. They just can't wait for their special day to arrive.

This is a day to celebrate each child's accomplishments. It would probably be more suitable towards the end of the year. Each child has there own can labeled MY-I CAN CAN. Using Popsicle sticks, write on each, things the child can do. Ex. I can say my ABC's.

There are unusual holidays we never celebrate like Elephant Appreciation day, Oatmeal Month, Honey Month, Pig Day, No socks Day, etc. I found a book that is loaded with ideas   for the Dull Holidays. It is called "Holidays for the Dull Days" by Marilee Whiting Woodfield (Instructional Fair Publishing). It is great and can supply you with so many activities (and art work for easy preparation) to add variety to the classroom. Have fun!!

July is National Blueberry Month! I had my kids look at blueberries and taste them. Then, I added a little water and heated them up in the microwave. (1 min) Then I mashed them up in front of the kids. Lastly, we used the mashed up blueberry juice as paint. They painted a white sheet of paper and I cut them into circles...Our Own Blueberry Bunch!

Sneaker Week

Before sneaker week we ask parents to bring in old sneakers of all sizes. Usually the sneakers have great designs on the sole and we use them to print. We put the sneaker in different colored paint. Our song is "Where do my sneakers go at night?" BY GREG AND STEVE. We paint sneakers and make paper flowers and use the sneaker as a vase. I made a "sneaker puppet" from an old pair of brightly colored sneakers. I cut the front of the sneaker with a sharp knife so that made the mouth. I used the laces for ears by stretching the laces but not tying them to make two loops on either side so it looks like ears. I glued wiggle eyes and Voila! Sneaker puppet. I use this puppet to teach manners. I call him "Stinky Sneaker" I put a long tongue(red felt) in the mouth and I make mouth noises when he talks. The children love Stinky and we have a great time laughing and teaching each other manners. In our dramatic area,  we put large sneakers for children to wear over their shoes. Our science corner we dissect sneakers to see what's inside the sole, how its put together (glued or sewed)We take out the insides and examine it. We graph the children's sneakers by small, medium, large. We use small sneakers to make footprints in the play-do. We put some in the block area and we build with them. We've made bridges, swimming pools, hiding places for the play people. It's always one of my favorite weeks and the children always want to do it again.
