Contact_FullName: Louise Contact_Email: jajernigan@aol.com date:: 07-07-02 Area: Summer- Misc Idea: For water play day we use a soaker hose for very young children and older children alike. Some children like the gentle spray better than the sprinkler like toys. Although we offer both. Plus we put a hose on the monkey bars with a nozzle on very fine spray, like a shower. Also colored ice cubes in the water table, and shells give children a chance to experience cold and nature. We also let the children write on the sidewalk with chalk and then paint over it with water for a different experience.
ideaOn a piece of white paper covering the whole door, have the children help draw waves and a sun. Then cut out a tracing of a boat on different colored construction paper. Tape or glue the boats all around the door and the theme on it can be "Sailing Into Summer".
7-21-00A cute idea for a summer bulletin board is to use bulletin board paper (green for grass, blue for sky). Using any color paint have child take off shoe and paint their bare foot (only one) and place on white construction paper. Cut out around footprint and write the name of the child on the print. Use the heading "Stepping into Summer" and cover board with footprints. Add cotton ball clouds and butterflies, flowers etc. Looks nice for summer.
6-12-00Summer Sun's This is a good activity to use with beginning cutters. Prepare large yellow construction circles. Have the children cut or snip around the edges to make "sun rays". They can bend rays back and forth for a different look and of course draw or paint happy faces on their suns using markers or paint.
6-8-00Hi! I thought your idea sounded great for summer fun, we live in Tucson, AZ and our older kids love to do this activity. During water conservation times (all through June- August) we fill water sport bottles with the pull top, flip them upside down and squeeze! This works great for the fives who can get frustrated trying to use a sink or faucet. It saves sooo much water! Our 11 yr old discovered that a five gallon pail filled quickly under the faucet, from the overflow and filling process. We also make sure to check for LATEX ALLERGIES before doing this activity, because balloons are made of latex, and would cause a reaction.
6-8-00"Launch into summer" or "Get into books and out of this world!!!" with this bulletin board idea. Use watercolor paints to make coffee filter planets. Cover bb with black paper and scatter planets. Add construction paper stars with children's names and the titles of books they've read. Or add rocket ships with narratives of students plans/goals for the summer.
5-31-00The children love making making these visors. Cut a crescent shape out of a dinner size paper plate, older children can do this themselves if you draw the crescent for them. Have the children decorate their visor with markers, names could be added here too. Punch holes in the ends with a paper punch (you might want to reinforce the holes with tape) and attach elastic cording, adjusting to fit the child's head. Be sure to head outdoors to try them out!
5-30-00Our school sprinkles small colored rocks in our sand which the children call treasures. When the weather is nice, we bring a table outside with a plastic pitcher of water and cups and have mock lemonade stands. The children then collect treasures for money and kids practice pouring their lemonade. The treasures go into a jar and are then sprinkled out into the sand at the end of the day. The kids enjoy this so much we have made lemonade signs and now bring out several tables to accommodate all those who want to play.
5-28-00On warm summer days children can go water painting outside! A great alternative to paint for younger preschoolers is water! Mess-free and worry-free! Any spills need only dry! Adding bubbles/or food coloring is optional and makes it even more interesting. Simply fill transparent containers (of desired sizes) with warm water, give children the brushes, and let them watch their "paint" evaporate in the sun! Have them paint a brick surface, and they'll shriek with excitement each time their pictures disappear! Thanks to a talented colleague for this inexhaustible idea. Enjoy!

Date: 8-13-99During the dead of winter in NY we all dream of going on a vacation to a warm place. We have the theme of "mid winter Getaway" and for one of the snacks, we made a Beach scene. We made blue Jell-o with the kids and let it set. We then took graham crackers and put them in a zipper bag and crushed them using various "tools" (blocks, plastic tools etc.). We took the "Sand" and put it on the bottom of a small bowl, used the blue Jell-o for the water and then finished it off with whipped cream for the waves. Then we put some candy fish in there to finish it off. The kids (and teachers) loved it!!! Date: 7-24-99Car Wash - At our school we have a car wash when the weather gets so hot! We block off the parking lot and provide the children with sponges, squirt bottles, soapy water, and squeegees. Several teachers get the privilege of getting their car washed for free. Water tables and easels with shaving cream are also set up for lots of messy fun. Don't forget to have the children come in their swimsuits with sunscreen on. It's wonderful, water fun!! Date: 6-30-99This is a real cute board ,I took a picture of all the children in my class with there legs apart and their hands up over their heads .I cut each picture out carefully around each and every corner of them .I found a pattern of a skate board and put each picture on top of the skateboard .They look like they are skating .I painted a winding path onto construction paper on the bulletin board and placed them all on the path .I titled my board "Skating into Summer" If you would like the pattern for the skate board please E-mail me and I can send it to you . 10-7-98 Name: Melissa Let the children go out side and pick up pine cones if you have them or find them some were else. Take yarn and tie it around the top of the pine cone and then roll it in creamy peanut butter then roll in bird seed. Last let the children pick a place were they want to hang them out side. The squirrels like them too! YOU DON'T WANT TO DO THIS TO LATE IN THE YEAR BECAUSE THE BIRDS WILL EXPECT YOU TO KEEP FEEDING THEM THROUGH THE WINTER. 7-30-98 Name: Alison E-Mail: cooter697@aol.com When you think of summer you think of camping. For our camping unit we rolled up newspaper into paper logs and tied them with rubber bands. The children then painted them brown. After they dried(the next day) we set them up for our campfire adding red and orange cellophane and a flashlight to the middle. We sat around the "campfire" singing songs and telling stories. The children loved it.We ended our campfire time by eating 'smores. It was great! 7-17-98 Name: Wendy E-Mail: wendynye@together.net TINY BUBBLES! GIANT BUBBLES! Start with homemade bubble solution: 3 cups water1 cup dish soap1/4 cup corn syrup Mix all ingredients and let sit overnight. For tiny bubbles, dip a flyswatter into the solution and shake. For giant bubbles, pour solution into a wading pool (add more if needed). Add a hula hoop to the bottom of the pool. Take off your shoes and socks and step in. Pull the hula hoop up to your shoulders, or over your head. You will be inside a giant bubble! 7-17-98 Name: Wendy E-Mail: wendynye@together.net Sand Castle Keepers 1 cup water 1/3 cup flour 6 cups of sand (sifted for purity and fineness) Place water and flour in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat until thickened (about 2 minutes). Add this mixture to the sand in a large bowl, and stir. Using margarine tubs and yogurt containers, build a sand castle on a foil-covered cutting board. Let dry one day before adding toothpick flags. Let dry two days before handling. 7-9-98 Name: Cheryl E-Mail: Tugboat63@aol.com Since allot of us care givers usually have school age children through the summer I find it best to gear the summer fun towards fun only. We set most of our enrichment aside and focus on a weekly theme. So far we have done Giggles & Games ( each child has a day to bring their favorite board game as well as play a few old favorites) Sports week( each day is set aside for a sport) we also made sun visors. Circus week( we put on a circus and did animal related activities. Beach week( water activities only, sponge, paintbrush, swim, etc.) Campout week( set up a tent, pj day pillow fights, hot dogs smores, a nature walk. We have had a blast so far. Use your imagination and keep parents informed of the schedule and you will have a successful summer program! 7-1-98 Name: Eunike E-Mail: niketim@e-z.net Take one day to be your WATER DAY. Put your children's swimsuit and water shoes on. Fill some containers full of water. Put water toys into the containers, and let your children have fun. If you have enough budget, you can buy water sprinklers for kids. Let the water sprinkle on your kids. It is the fun things to do for this Summer.
