ideaI teach Pre-k at at Day Care Center and most of my class stays the summer ....I really like Watermelons, so I made a Giant Watermelon using the kids hand. Red for the center and green for the rind I dipped their hands in each color and wrote in big letters across the top" Enjoy Summer" for the pits we made a fist in black and put them randomly around the melon. This can stay up all summer long. I just added summer pictures around the melon for fun !
ideaKeepsake Beach Towels I had each child bring in a light-colored, low-napped bath towel. Before the day the children used them, I wrote each the name of each child on every towel in permanent marker (16 children=16 names on each towel) along with the name of our preschool and date. One at a time, I painted each child's hand with acrylic paint in the color of his/her choice, and helped them put their handprint above their name on each towel. This project took several days, but it was absolutely adorable, and each child had a beach towel with all of their friends names and handprints on it.
ideaPing-Pong Painting I did this with the handicapped pre-school class, and they thought it was great! Collect all sorts of round containers and get a bunch of ping-pong balls. Have different colors of paint in different bowls. Give the children a container and have them place a piece of paper inside so that it conforms to the shape of the container. Then, give each child a plastic cup with about 5 balls in it. Have the children dip the balls, one at a time, in the different colors of paint. Put the top back on the container. Now the children can work on their motor movements by rolling the containers back, forth, sideways, and by giving them a good shaking! Makes neat noises, too! I have found the big, dry oatmeal containers to be the perfect size. This can be done as a group project as well. Enjoy!
9-30-00I teach three to five year olds and for the beginning of summer we made a large sign welcoming the season. We splattered painted a large section of butcher paper and then I took a close-up picture of each child. We then attached each picture to a camera-shaped cut out. On the cameras, I wrote the child's first name in puffy paint and attached the finished cameras to the splattered painted paper. The title of the banner was "Splashing our way to a picture perfect summer."
8-23-00Materials needed: small paper plates, yellow paint and yellow crepe paper, sunflower seeds, green crepe paper or construction paper, glue scissors. Have the children paint their plate yellow. When the paint is dry have them tear strips of yellow crepe paper and glue them onto the plate. They then glue sunflower seeds onto the paper plate, the children can make stems from the green crepe paper or green construction and glue them on.
8-15-00An Outside Activity:
7-16-00Outdoor painting:
7-14-00Place a piece of wax paper out and let the children make squiggles and designs with glue on the wax paper (try to have squiggle lines thicker than normal). Then have children put sand or colored sand over the glue. Let dry and then peel from the wax paper. They turn out really neat! We even hung ours in the window.
7-12-00Sunflowers... Materials needed: Sunflower seeds, paper plates, white glue, yellow construction paper Pour white glue into a paper plate, allowing it to spread to the edges. Have children drop in sunflower seeds in the middle of the plate. Give them large flower petals cut from yellow construction paper to go around the inside of the plate, (with one end in the glue) Let dry overnight and voila - a beautiful sunflower!
7-10-00I came up with a great idea for all those CD's that come in the mail. Cover the back with felt or colored paper. Have the children decorate with anything that sparkles.. ie sequence, glitter,... Add a ribbon through the center hole and hang or add a magnet to the back. Watch them shine, shine, shine!!
6-8-00Sun Catchers you'll need: wire clothes hangers, food coloring, cling wrap, and watered-down glue. lay the cling wrap flat on the table. position the hanger on top of the cling wrap. spread glue onto area inside hanger. place drops of food coloring in area as well. fold cling wrap to completely cover both sides of hanger. let the children use their finger to spread the colors through the cling wrap. they love to see the colors mix and swirl!
4-28-00Paper filter rainbows Materials: paper filters and food coloring and a squirt bottle filled with water. You take the coffee filter and lay it flat on the ground. You have the child squeeze drops of food coloring onto the coffee filter and make designs. Then spray the filter with water and the colors will run together and form a rainbow like design on the filter.
4-12-00"Zippy drink" 1) 2 ripe bananas 2) 2 cups orange juice 3) 2 cups orange sherbet 4) Ice cubes 5) Pour all ingredients into a blender and blend until the consistency is one of a smoothie! 6) Taste 7) YUMMY!!! - Great summer treat :c)
Date: 4-5-00Kids love to play with bubbles in the in the summer. So get out those bubbles, and make bubble prints on paper. In a margarine container mix 1/3 tempra paint, or food coloring with 2/3 liquid dishwashing detergent and a small amount of water. Have the children blow with a straw in the solution until the bubbles rise over the top of the container (don't forget to poke a pin hole in the straw so the kids wont suck up the solution) then have them place a piece of paper over the top of the solution and move it around until they have bubble prints on paper.
Date: 8-13-99Simple Sun Catchers Clear contact paper Small pieces of tissue paper I used this with very young preschoolers (16-24 mos.) and they turned out terrific projects. Cut contact paper into rectangles about 5" by 10". Peel back the protective covering only half way. Have kids place the tissue paper pieces all over the exposed side. Remove the remaining protective covering and fold over the tissue paper. These can even be trimmed to different shapes. We made sun shapes. We simply cellophane taped our sun catchers to the windows. Beautiful and easy.
Date: 7-12-99July is National Blueberry Month! I had my kids look at blueberries and taste them. Then, I added a little water and heated them up in the microwave. (1 min) Then I mashed them up in front of the kids. Lastly, we used the mashed up blueberry juice as paint. They painted a white sheet of paper and I cut them into circles...Our Own Blueberry Bunch! Date: 6-1-99Sunflower Handprint Materials: Green, Yellow, Brown paint White paper 12x18 Paint brushes Paint the child's fingers yellow and the palm brown. Make handprints at the top of the page in a circle until the fingers wrap around the brown and it looks like a flower. I let the child use the green to make the stem and leaves and grass.
Date: 6-1-99Every summer, my senior preschool group and I take a city bus to the GoodWill to buy lots of flat sheets. We take them back to the center and build a "fort-making kit", including all of the stuff needed to make a wonderful outdoor summer tent - wide masking tape, safe scissors and string. The children have a fabulous time and hone, over and over again, problem solving a aco-operative building skills! In the process, we also learn a bit about recycling fabric!
Date: 6-1-99Shadow Tracing! We have a great time having the children pose as we (or another child) traces their shadows on the sidewalk or cement wall, with chalk. Then, with colored chalk, the kid get to color them in outfits to fit the pose, or what they are wearing that day. Kids love these self portraits That decorate our sidewalk in front of our center. (The highlight of this activity is when "they" get to trace and color their caregivers!!!)
Date: 6-1-99SPLATTER ART Take an old sheet or large sheet of paper and tape it to the fence. Then give the kids paint brushes and let them flick the paint onto the sheet. The kids LOVE it!! But, a couple of hints...for those little arms to flick the paint forward, they have to first snap the paintbrush back, so don't stand behind them(I ruined a brand new shirt this way!)! Also, have the kids in a bathing suit or long paint shirt with their shoes and socks off. Less parent complaints this way! 7-17-98 Name: Alysse E-Mail: rainwhenidie@hotmail.com Feet Painting: Have large pieces of butcher paper and a small tray of paint sitting in front of a chair. Let the child dip their foot into the paint and paint a picture. For easy cleanup have a bucket of soapy water near and a towel! 7-17-98 Name: Alison E-Mail: cooter697@aol.com We had so much fun with our preschoolers today!!!We put up a big piece of butcher paper outside on the fence. We put Koosh balls in containers of colored paint and let the children have fun throwing them against the paper. They made cool designs on the paper and we all had so much fun. A few hints, we had the children already in their bathing suits all ready to be hosed down in the hot weather!!!! We also added a little bit of liquid soap to the paint for easier washing. It was a blast!!!! 7-4-98 Name: Doreen E-Mail: Mmmy4@hotmail.com Watermelon magnets Cut red styrofoam plates into fours. Have children cover edge of each section with cut up squares of green tissue paper for the rind. Save watermelon seeds and have children glue five or six seeds on their slice of watermelon. Attach a magnet on back and they have a cute summer refrigerator magnet. 7-1-98 Name: Kristi E-Mail: mnb2b@mci2000.com SUMMER ART IDEA Cooperative Golfball Art Materials: plastic swimming pool large piece of paper paint (3 -4 colors) golf balls (one per color of paint) Place large piece of paper inside bottom of empty swimming pool. Put golf balls of each color in bottom of pool. The children hold the edges of the pool and COOPERATIVELY roll the golf balls around the pool. (Good playground activity.) The kids at our school loved it and we made lots of murals! 7-1-98 Name: Adrienne E-Mail: GloryLight@AOL.com Ice Cream Cones - You will need circles traced on different colored construction paper as well as triangles on brown paper. Allow the children to pick out the different "flavors" of ice cream they want on their cone. After cutting them out have the children glue them to the cone. You may want to write the children's names on their cones. (Real sprinkles and red pom-pom cherries are optional accessories the kids love to add on!) 5-26-98 Name: Pat E-Mail: Pattypre@aol.com Bubble blowing - purple colored liquid soap (or other color according to the season) in a eye dropper bottle (you might water this down), plastic straws, a small pitcher, a small sponge and a small bowl for water all on a tray. With the pitcher, the child child fills the bowl with water, adds one dropper full of soap into the bowl, selects a straw and then blows. Make sure the child removes everything from the tray except the bowl of soapy water. This is sort of like blowing bubbles into a glass of milk but allow the child to have the bubbles overflow from the dish onto the tray. The more they blow, the more to clean up but children love doing this and it is great for oral motor development (which affects articulation skills). Submitted by: Joni E-Mail: joni_c@sprynet.com Activity I stuck up big sheets of paper outside and put paint in a tray. The children dipped new flyswatters in the paint and smacked the paper. I tried this with 2 year olds and they went crazy for it. Submitted by: ginny E-Mail: Msginnyedu@aol.com Activity Try giving the children an ice cube and dry tempera paint or unsweetened Kool-Aid on a piece of paper...let them create a "KOOL PAINTING!" all they have to do is drag the ice thru the dry mixture and paint away. Put the paper into a flat box from sodas and let them rotate the box and let the ice move on its own on the colored dry "stuff". I have also used paint by water pages from books and let the children make "magic" paintings using the ice cubes instead of a brush and water. Submitted by: Stephanie E-Mail: Stephanie_Rottmayer@Convene.com Activity Fill spray bottles with food color water and let the kids spray the sandbox sand. You'll have your own painted desert. Then show them how to magically return the sand to normal by turning over with a sand shovel and start again. Submitted by: Lynda E-Mail: Pattison@bc.sympatico.com Fence Painting Items Required:
Activity Fill the buckets with water and soap and let the children paint everything outside, fence, climbing center, trikes etc. Children just love this activity.
Talk to your kiddo's about things they like to do in the summer.
Then, guide the children to look through magazines and travel brochures and cut out
pictures of their favorite summer things. Provide glue and paper to make a
collage. Ask the children to tell you about their collage and write down their words
on their paper.
