Area: Snowmen-Songs and Fingerplays

Idea:

For our snowman theme, I cut out three circle shapes -- one large, one medium, and one small out of white felt for the snowman's body. I made a scarf from material scraps, two arms from brown pipe cleaners, a "carrot" nose from an orange pipe cleaner (bend in half to make a point), a black hat cut from black felt, a smile from red yarn, eyes from black felt, and a sun from yellow felt. I purchased large buttons and put felt on the back of them. During our circle time, I read this poem that I made up:

Snowman

One little snowman short and fat,

Wearing a scarf and a big black hat.

He has two eyes so he can see,

And also a smile, just for me.

Two sticks for arms,

And a carrot nose,

Buttons down the front,

Almost to his toes.

When the weather is cold,

He stands up tall.

But when the sun comes out,

It makes him very small.

As I read each line, I put the corresponding part on the felt board. The second time I read it, I let the students put the part on our snowman. For added reinforcement, I cut out the various parts of our snowman out of scrap materials with different textures for each child and placed them in a baggie with his/her name on the baggie. We read the poem again and each child gets to put his/her snowman together. I sent home a copy of the poem for the children to recite and act out with their snowman parts for their families. The children really enjoyed this, and they can do it over and over again!

I learned this song from a toddler teacher I student taught with. I'm not sure where she learned this song. I use it with my Pre-K class (3's, 4's and 5's) and they absolutely love it! I made 3 snowball shapes to go along with the song, and decorated the small ball to resemble a snowman's face, and posted it on a felt board as we sang.

"Snow Pal Song" tune: "Frere Jacques"

"Great big ball, great big ball, Made of snow, made of snow. Rolling down the street, landing At my feet, great big ball, great Big ball.

Medium-size ball, medium-size ball, Made of snow, made of snow. Rolling down the street, landing At my feet, medium-size ball, Medium-size ball.

Teeny tiny ball, teeny tiny ball, Made of snow, made of snow. Rolling down the street, landing At my feet, teeny tiny ball, teeny Tiny ball.

Watch my snow pal grow as up the Balls they go... 1 2 3, 1 2 3!"

Five Little Snowpeople

Five little snowpeople, jolly and fat.
The first one waved a big, black hat.
The second one clapped his hands in the cold.
The third one's eyes blinked and rolled.
The fourth one stamped his feet up and down.
And the fifth one turned around and around.

I do this fingerplay having five children standing up front and doing the motions. The rest of the class is reciting the fingerplay. We do it often switching the children who are doing the motions.

For the Christmas holidays use the old tune "I'm a little teapot". Use these words and move accordingly.

I'm a little snowperson short and fat.
Here are my buttons, here is my hat.
When the sun comes out, I cannot play.
I just slowly melt away!

"I Built a Little Snowman"

I built a little snowman. { make circle with hands }
He had a carrot nose. { point to nose}
Along came a bunny. { hold up to bent fingers}
And what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny, { make bunny again }
Looking for his lunch, { hop bunny around }
Ate the snowman's nose. { pretend bunny is eating nose }
Nibble! Nibble! Crunch! { pretend to be eating a carrot }

Sung to the theme I'm a little teapot.

I'm a little snowman short and fat.
Here's my scarf and here's my hat.
When the snow is falling come and play.
Build a snowman every day.

This snowman song is sung to the song "5 little pumpkins", I just changed some of the words.

5 little snowmen sitting on the ground, (pat hands on floor)
the first one said; "oh my aren't we round." (make circle with arms)
The second one said; "there are snowflakes in the air." (wiggle fingers above head)
The third one said; "but we don't care." (shrug shoulders)
The fourth one said; "lets run and run and run. (pat hands quickly on the floor)
The fifth one said; "I'm ready for some fun." (smile)
Whew went the wind (blow) and out came the sun (make circle with arms over head)
and the five little snowman knew their fun was done.( pretend your melting)

note: I made 5 sets of snowmen out of tag board and glued on Popsicle sticks. Each set were wearing the same colored hats and scarves (2 red, 2 blue, 2 green, 2 blue, 2 yellow). I gave 5 kids a snowman to hold during the song and make dance and had the other 5 on the floor (kids that did not have a snowman to hold did the actions to the song). At the end of the song the children with the snowmen came up and told me the color and matched it to the correct one on the floor. Repeat song till everyone has had a turn holding a snowman.

Then the sun it melted, melted, melted,
Then the sun it melted small, small, small. (pretend to melt.)

I am a snowman made of snow (stand still)
I stand quite still at 10 below.
With a big long carrot for a nose, (indicate body part)
And worn out shoes to make my toes.
I have two apples for my eyes,
And a woolen coat about this size. (measure)
I have a scarf that's warm and red. (circle arms around neck)
And a funny hat upon my head. (touch hands to head)
The sun is coming out, Oh dear! (make circle overhead w/arms)
The sun is melting me I fear (begin to sink to floor)
Oh my, I was so nice and round,
Now I'm just a puddle on the ground! (curl up on floor)

Have children make a snowman small enough to glue to a "Popsicle" stick or tongue depressor. The snowman will be used as a small puppet to sing the snowman hokey pokey.

Snowman Hokey Pokey (to the tune of the Hokey pokey).

You put your snowman up, you put your snowman down,
You put your snowman up and you shake him all around.
You do the snowman pokey and you turn your self around,
Two stomps on the ground.

You put your snowman in front
You put your snowman in back,
You put your snowman in front and you give your knee a whack.
You do the snowman pokey and you turn your self around,
Two stomps on the ground.

You touch your snowman to your head,
You touch your snowman to your toe,
You touch your snowman to your head and you shake it to and fro,
You do the snowman pokey and your turn your self around,
Two stomps on the ground.
