When we learn about circles, we dip plastic cups into paint or stamp pads and then we press them onto paper to make lots of circle designs!!!

Cut a shape frame out of construction paper. Put clear contact paper on one side. Have small paper shapes cut from different colored paper. The children can stick the shapes to the contact paper to make a neat collage. Hang these from the ceiling for great mobiles. I work with under 2's so this is a great alternative to using glue.

Shape Book:

We make a Shape Book by using different media for each page. For circles the children use paper towels rolls or corks dipped in different color paints. For triangles I will give them precut triangles in different types and colors to paste. For squares I will give them a template to paint on. For squares they can do rubbings.

Somewhere on the page I write the name of the shape as a sight word.

For the cover I give them a circle, a square, a triangle and 4 rectangles to make a shape person. They become quite creative.

Circles - When we are learning about circles, I cut out large circles from construction paper and have children stamp circle shapes, all sizes, on them using empty toilet tissue rolls, plastic cups, corks, etc. dipped in paint. When dry I have the students glue on circles such as cheerios and buttons. I also give them smiley face stickers to add. We do circles in Sept. and the color of that month is red, so I make the large circle out of red paper to also reinforce our color of the month.

This idea can be used in a number of areas. We used this idea to teach shapes and letters. Boil some long spaghetti noodles and let the children play with them in a small group. You can show them that the spaghetti will make different shapes. Let the children decide what shape they want the noodle to be in. (You can have shapes already cut out or traced on a paper so they can form the shape easily.) Let the noodles sit out in open air for a while. Surprise... you have shaped noodles!

In our preschool class we made construction paper shape chickens we used large yellow ovals as the body, then we traced out the kids hand prints out of yellow construction paper for the chickens wings and attached these to each side, we used small black circles for his eyes and a orange triangle for his beak, also two orange triangles were glued to the bottom for his feet, the kids loved them and it made a cute keepsake for the parents, write the child's name and the date on the back.

Shapes: To reinforce the shapes we are making "stained-glass" windows I cut shapes out of cardboard (I used the sides of cereal boxes) and then cut shapes inside these shapes like real stain glass windows. The children chose what shape they wanted and roller painted them black, and then stuck colored cellophane over the holes. The results were beautiful and the children were using shape language in their own conversations. Teaches light and color and brightens up the room.

I prepare basic shapes using a variety of materials, for example, sandpaper, corrugated cardboard, oak tag, foam. These shapes can then be used for stencils and rubbings in the art center. They could also be used in the sensory center. I also let the kids draw shapes using shaving cream. They can also draw the shapes using rice, salt, sand, oatmeal in a shallow pan.

Circle-O-Saurus - I cut several sizes of circles and let the kids make dinosaurs out of circles. They really turned out cute, and the kids had fun with it.

Triangle - ice cream cone. Children cut triangle out of brown paper to make the cone and cut a scoop of ice cream out of white paper. (Teacher traces the shape on the paper.) Cut small triangles out of different colors. Kids glue the cone and ice cream onto a 9 x 12 sheet of purple paper to make ice cream cone and glue triangles onto the ice cream to make jimmies.

Sally Square - Children cut out 2 1" white squares for eyes, a 1" brown square for nose and a 2" red square for the mouth and 2 - 2" blue squares for the feet. Teacher cuts 4 - 9" x 1" yellow strips for the arms and legs. Children fold strips back and forth. Using a 9" dark blue square for the face/body children glue on eyes, nose, mouth arms and legs. Glue 2 strips on either side for the arms and 2 strips on the bottom for the legs. Glue blue squares at end of legs for feet. Glue wiggly eyes onto the white square eyes. Use shredded crinkled paper for the hair.

idea

Make a Shape Book Use a 9x6 (1/2 of the big sheets) sheet of construction paper and fold in half. Then take 2 sheets of 8.5x11 paper and fold in half. Put on the first page: Red Circle Red Circle What do you See? Have red circles available for the children to glue on the page. 2nd page: (on the top) I see a green triangle looking at me. Have green triangles for the children to glue. (at the bottom of the page write:) Green triangle green triangle what do you see? Keep on till you've used all the shapes and on the last page have at the top "I see ___________ looking at me." Child can write their name on the line (maybe!) and draw a picture of themselves.

Shape Puppets

I used the poems in the Shape Songs section to create shape puppets.

I created the shapes in a computer document and typed the poems inside each shape.

I cut construction paper to 8 1/2 X 11 to fit in our copy machine and ran multi-colored copies to the kids could choose which color they liked.

The kids cut out the shapes, added arms and legs and drew on faces, etc. They became very creative and everyone's was very different.

A Collage with Pizazz!!

Before they started, I mixed the paint with white glue. The kids used roller brushes to paint their papers and then added precut shapes for a beautiful effect..

I like to do shape collages. In advance I cut construction paper into whatever shape we are working on and then let the children glue on collage stuff. We hang the collages in our circle time area so we can use them as a visual reminder of which shape we are learning about.

Another easy idea to do with shapes is to cut large shapes out of white construction paper and let the children use starch and tissue paper to decorate. They paint on the starch and then press on the tissue. They can paint over the tissue again with starch to be sure it sticks. These are very colorful and fun for kids 2-5.

Give children construction paper with shapes printed on them and have the children cut out the shapes. This is good cutting practice. Have them make a collage from the shapes they have cut or you have cut. Let them use markers or crayons to decorate.

We focus on a shape a week. With my pre-k children I cut several different sizes of the shape of the week or let the children cut it out. Then they glue it on their paper and turn it into something by drawing the details. Some of the children are very creative.
