FullName: Sharri Email: sharrilou@hotmail.com date:: 04/07/03 Area: Quilting-misc. Idea: At the beginning of each year, we do a "I'm Special" unit. We print each child's hand on an 8" square of paper. Then they are given another square of white paper and 2" squares of colored paper to make a quilt block. These are then taped together, quilt style, alternating hands and patchwork squares. When it comes down, I cut them apart and each child gets to take theirs home.
ideaI've seen several "Friendship Quilt" ideas...here's a cute addition. I gave my kids a white paper square with their name in the middle and a dashed line around their name and a dashed line around the outside of the square (looks like stitching). They decorated with collage stuff. When I hung them up, I hung them touching, with a border around the whole thing, and the center square had this poem on it: "With out hands we made this quilt, and we each made a special part, to show you how the friendship we share, warms each little heart!" On the wall it really looks like a quilt, and the kids are proud of it!
3-12-01Have large piece of white butcher paper pre-cut and on the table. With a black marker section off individual rectangles for the children. Place various media on the table for the children to use to create a "quilt". You can use crayons, markers, water colors, scrap paper, wall paper, material, etc. This is a wonderful activity for group participation, cooperation, turn taking, sharing, color recognition, texture, spatial awareness, and pattern awareness.
2-5-01We just did this activity this week. For the letter Q, each child made a quilt. I gave each child a half piece of tack-board and 9 assorted fabric squares. They glued the squares in a row, repeating after each row. This is a good activity for "patterns" also. After the child was done, they had their own "quilt".
2-5-01Our class just finished a section on quilts. We used wallpaper samples by cutting them into 2x2 squares and gluing them on construction paper. The children could do this all by themselves and really enjoyed it.
11-7-00I make a quilt with the children in my class by asking each child to bring in a piece of fabric from something that is special to them (I even had one child who brought in a piece of fabric from his first pair of big boy underwear). I have the children use real needles and thread to sew their fabric to a large bed sheet. Always stay with children when they are sewing they usually need help getting the needle thru the material.
9-10-00In addition to the Friendship Quilt art ideas...I also do a Language Arts activity in which I go around asking small groups of children to tell me why they like (a student) in our class. I write down their responses. These are written on white squares amongst the decorated squares with the child's name at the top. Example: it would have Jacob at the top and say things like "I like him. He's nice. He likes to be silly with me." (etc.) We read each child's square out loud when it's on the wall and it also stays up most of the year. I love seeing them blush when we read it. We often hear "What does my square say again?" Build that self-confidence!
9-1-00Friendship Quilt: Give each child a 12inch by 12inch piece of construction paper. Put out some beautiful junk ( yarn tissue paper sequins cotton balls ' you get the idea ). Let the children create their own square for a FRIENDSHIP QUILT. When all is dry, connect the squares together and display for everyone to see. Mine will hang in the classroom for almost the whole year. It is remarkable how the children will continue to talk about it for a long time. At the end of the year I cut it apart and send the squares home.
8-27-00Let the kids make a quilt using felt squares. They can assemble it with glue if needles are out of the question. They can do individual quilts or pass their finished squares around the room to make a "friendship quilt".
8-27-00My class made a Personality Quilt. Each child took home on the first day of school and piece of felt and glued their pictures and things that describe their personalities (ex. dolls, cars, roses etc.) Put all the pieces together and make a beautiful quilt. Talk about different personalities. Get to know each other and get them excited about diversity! |
