On Halloween, our children at the ASYMCA did a Pumpkin Walk. Copy a large pumpkin (about the width of an average 3 year old's feet side by side) onto 10 to 15 pages of orange construction paper. Cut them out and place the numbers 1 - 15 on them in black marker. Make them large enough for the children to read. Laminate each one. Tape them to the floor in a circle and proceed with the Pumpkin Walk as if you were doing a cake walk. We used pre-recorded songs such as "Monster Mash", "Adams Family", One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater" and the like. We gave out prizes such as a canister of PlayDoh or Mini Tonka Trucks or books from the local dollar store. It was such fun! (Your teachers can be involved as well - just make sure that you buy some "grown up" prizes such as planning calendars or gift certificates!)

I work in a pre school nursery in the north east of Scotland. during October we let the children hammer golf tees into pumpkins they love it.

A neat idea for your pumpkin theme would be a pumpkin patch. Put medium and small pumpkins on top of small amounts of straw. Have two mini wagons for children to pull. Put price tags on the pumpkins, have a cash register for the children to purchase the pumpkins to take home. Supply small paper bags big enough for the pumpkins to fit inside.

Pumpkin Puzzles

Using real pumpkins, after the children have explored the inside and outside of the pumpkins, removing seeds, pulp, etc. I cut various shapes out of our pumpkins all around the sides and used them as "puzzles". The children had to place the correct fitting pumpkin piece into the corresponding hole. Kids Loved it!

This is a cute story to tell. You will need a piece of orange construction paper and a pair of scissors).

Start the story by saying, Once there was a little mouse who lived in a field on a pumpkin farm. It was beginning to get colder out as autumn was coming so he decided to start looking for a home. (Fold the paper in half the short way while you are saying this much). He spotted a pumpkin laying on its side in the field and thought that it would make a good, warm place to live. (Cut out a half a pumpkin shape so that when you open the paper up it will look like a whole pumpkin. Don't forget the stem. Don't open the half of a pumpkin up. Hold it for the children to see so that the fold is down and looks like it is laying on its side.) The little mouse nibbled a hole in the pumpkin to get inside where it was warm. ( Tear a small hole out of the paper right in the middle of the fold) Once he got inside the little mouse saw that the door he used to get in would be too small for some of his friends to visit so ho nibbled a larger door for them. (tear another hole out on the side of the 1st hole that is away from the stem. Make it about halfway between the first hole and what will be the bottom of the pumpkin. Tear this hole taller to make it look like a bigger door. Remember you are making holes in the fold of the paper). Then the little mouse noticed that it was very dark in his new house so he decided to make a window. He nibbled and nibbled and soon he had a nice window to let in light. ( this hole is not made on the fold. It should be on the side that is closest to the stem and a few inches up from the fold. Make it about equal distance from the first small whole and the stem.) He was very proud of his house when it was done and he invited all of his friends over to wish them a Happy Halloween. (Open your pumpkin and the children will see that you have made a jack-o-lantern.) They will ask you to do it again so have another piece of paper ready!!!!

For a classroom or hallway decoration, you cut out 2 pumpkin shapes out of poster board. Cut a door in top one, open door and glue 2 shapes together. Cut out pumpkin seed shapes out of paper or poster board and write every child's name on separate seed and glue to 2nd sheet behind door. Then attach poem: Teacher, teacher, preschool teacher had a class that couldn't be neater. She stuck them in a pumpkin shell and there she left them very well.
