With a shower curtain from a dept. store (Wal-Mart), cut the bottom of the ocean/sea picture and tack it around the water/sand table. Put the remainder of the curtain with fish and water life on a curtain rod and hang it on the wall above the table-- you don't have a shower curtain, you now have a sea/ocean world. Mine is so cute, I can't wait to place it in the new classroom. I use the shelf under the table hidden by the curtain for storing the water/sand toys when not in use.

Idea:

The beginning of the year I made a Sponge Bob bulletin board. I used dark blue paper at the top and brown paper which I glued (with thinned out glue and a sponge type brush) sand to look like the bottom of the sea. In the middle I put a large picture of Sponge Bob with the saying "We Are Ready for Preschool!" Then I used clip art of various ocean animals and put the children's names on them. I also took green tissue paper and rolled it to look like seaweed and stapled it to the brown paper.

Idea:

I live about 1 mile from the Atlantic ocean, so it is very easy for me to have a large variety of items in a nature or science center. We collect shells, sea glass, seed pods, pinecones, sea grapes, etc... They love to use the magnifying glasses and microscope to look at this stuff!

We use the shells, broken or whole-on a variety of craft projects. Frames, magnets, etc... You can rub a shell on cement for awhile and it will rub a hole into the shell, thus allowing you to string it with other shells and beads for a cool ocean necklace. I am constantly looking for new and different things to add to my science center, even if I can only have it in there for the day! Today, a co-worker and I were at the beach and found several interesting things!! Some form of sea sponge and a bunch of teeny little shells hooked onto a piece of bark and shell. They opened up and these little hair like critters would come in and out. We don't know what they are yet!!! Going to take them (in salt water) to the Nature Center up the road and find out!!! I hope we can keep them alive for awhile and enjoy them in our classes!!!

Idea:

I set up my Book Center with child size lawn chairs and a clamp on umbrella. They loved pretending they were at the beach!! I got the chairs at Wal mart for $4.88 and the umbrella was $5.96.

I also got some plastic buckets and shovels and put things in them, like: the round container of wet wipes, crayons in the art center, etc...

I also set up a new center and put some cheap, plastic, blow up arm floaties, several pair of goggles and the round swim/float rings- as well as a tiny blow up pool with magnetic sea creatures and small dollar store fishing poles. They loved pretending they were swimming and fishing!! They also looked hilarious going around with the silly goggles on!!!

I also got a cheap plastic pool and set up an indoor sandbox. I put in a mill, shovels, molds, etc...and 2 folding canvas chairs with the short legs that you use at the beach. I do not have a sand/water table as a permanent part of my classroom, so this made for a nice and new sensory center!!! I had to sweep up sand everyday, but it was worth it because the kids loved it so, so much!!!

For my preschool "Under the Sea" theme we painted the back of our bulletin board with blue paint which I had poured salt into to make our ocean water. Then we added the caption "Under the Sea", and some cherri-o octopuses, rainbow fish, and seaweed that we had made. I also took a picture of each child wearing goggles, and inserted the pictures into a scuba diver background! They look so funny and the kids love their "scuba pictures"!

Idea:

This puppet idea has been such a success with my 3-year-olds. I'll try to explain it the best I can! While using the book The Rainbow Fish, I created stick puppets of the main characters (rainbow fish, 3 fish friends, the starfish, and the octopus). I just drew basic pictures on colorful paper, mounted them on poster board and laminated them. I used light blue for rainbow fish; pastel yellow, green and pink for the 3 friends; bright pink for the starfish; and navy for the octopus. They are each about 6" big and mounted on large craft sticks. On the fish puppets, I drew the pattern of their fins. On the rainbow fish puppet, I colored a few fins here and there so he looked bright - just like the pictures in the book. Next, I made 4 little shiny fins using poster board, colorful glitter and lots of layers of glue. On the back of each of these fins I put velcro (the scratchy side). Then, I put four small patches of Velcro (the soft side) over some of the fins I had drawn on the rainbow fish. On each of the 3 fish friends, I put one piece of soft-side Velcro. Now when the children see the puppets in the puppet stage area, they can re-tell and act out the story. Rainbow Fish can even share his fins when his friends ask! Good small motor development to remove the tiny fins from the velcro. My kids seem to never grow tired of sharing the fins, and they still remember the story after four months!

Area: Ocean

Idea:

While studying the ocean we do a lot of crafts to learn children about ocean life. I put a piece of blue bulletin board paper on the bottom of the wall outside the classroom. On the very bottom of the paper I add sand to look like the bottom of the ocean floor. On the ceiling I add light blue, navy blue and white crepe paper streamers from the ceiling tiles to make the wave look of the top of the ocean. The bulletin board is ready to go. Then as we study ocean life we add the children's crafts. We make jellyfish from clear plastic lids. Cut the lid in half, punch 3 to 4 holes in flat side of lid and add embroider thread. Sea horse pattern- mix shedder wheat cereal and glue. Clam- paint inside of paper plate pink let dry, add cotton ball to center, fold plate in half staple at bend to hold it half closed. School of fish- pudding boxes wrapped in wallpaper samples, add aluminum foil fens, red lips, wiggly eyes. Starfish- let children paint the starfish light yellow then sprinkle with pink, clear, or blue glitter. Turtles- small bowl painted green add tail, head, legs, and arms.

Paper bag fish. Get a lunch size paper bag, draw a line one third of the way down the middle and have child color under that section. Fold down the bottom of the bag to form a point and tape the back. Tie the open ends together, add a face - and it's a fish! We hang these in the front window at our school - very cool!

Decorating under the sea: use blue and green cling wrap and blue and green crape paper for the water and seaweed. Have the children make fish and other sea animals and decorate the room with it. To make it realistic make a boat bottom and put it on the ceiling for the under the sea effect complimented with an anchor. My preschool did this and both the children and the parents loved it. Also buy cheap nets and put the crabs and lobsters in them. have many types of sea shells around and talk about them. And keep your water table full with plastic sea life and shells. You could even use plastic shoe boxes for this activity.

I purchased 2 car windshield visors that had an ocean theme on them...one was just an ocean scene, the other had dolphins jumping out of the water. I set these up in an area that could easily be blocked off from others (like our book center) and let the children play with ocean puppets. Some pretended like they were in the ocean with their puppets, and some used the visors as a backdrop for their own puppet show.

In our preschool, we each pick a theme to do our room in. Mine was Under the Sea. I decorated my center tags, the door with everyone's names, cubby tags and even a sea wall where we finger-painted large sheets of paper, made different fish, and added seaweed made from saran wrap. Anything we can think of we decorate.

You will need: A bed sheet an overhead projector cut outs of different fish, one for each child.

I used this activity during beach week with my special ed preschoolers. The children colored their fish anyway they liked. I then enlisted the help of a teacher's aid. We held up a bed sheet in front of an overhead projector. After turning the lights off we put on two pieces of music "Under the Sea" from Little Mermaid and "aquarium" from Carnival of the Animals for contrasting speeds. The children were then allowed to create shadows with their fish and have them move on the sheet any way they wanted. The colors of the fish came through the bed sheet and it gave each child a moment to be the star of their own show. I then hung up the bed sheet on the wall and used it as a bulletin board for our decorative fish!

For the beginning of the year, our unit is going to be ocean. You need two plastic baggies, blue hair gel, beads (to look like bubbles) and foam fish and ocean animals. You add the gel, beads, and fish to one bag. Zip it up and put inside other bag. Either tape or glue end of second bag shut. This is a wonderful sensory idea and the kids will absolutely love it!!!!

Swimming Fish Puppets..... I don't know how many of you are gearing up for water units, ocean units, marine units or even Ocean Odyssey Bible School, but here is a fun art project. You need both the large and small sized PAPER plates (Styrofoam does not work as well.) Start by stapling two large paper plates together, so that the plate bottoms are on the outside and look much like this (). Leave about a 6in. arch unstapled. With 2 of your small paper plates cut 1 wedge from each (you want them to be a good size.) Now staple one to each side of the open hole of the paper plate. Curve outward. You should now have a fish. Your hand should be able to fit inside the "tail" to make a puppet. You can have children decorate it how ever. Some suggestions are water colors, large sequins, colored macaroni, Etc.

We are doing a unit on Ocean/Sea Life. To help the children enter into the world of the ocean, we took two clear plastic drop cloths and outline pictures of fish, shells, seaweed, etc. I then had the children color the pictures with paint. After it was dry, I put it away for a couple of weeks. When we started the unit, I put the cloths up across the room. On one side the children could enter into the world of ocean life. I had various activities set up behind the cloths. The children had a blast diving under the sea!!

After printing them we cut them out, glued them on blue paper and everyone had their own ocean picture.

Tell each child you want them to draw or paint a picture of a crab (it can be any animal) doing something they think a crab might do or where he lives. Then let the children tell you what each of their pictures mean. Teachers bind the pictures w/some words you came up with into a book. The kids will love hearing a story they helped create!

Let each child choose an ocean animal necklace and they participate during the day according to their necklaces. Seahorses line up first for motor room, Jellyfish line up first for snack time, etc. The children seemed to enjoy telling their parents "I was a jellyfish today.". We also talked about what color their animal was and how many of each animal we had that day.

Finding fun factual books on Ocean life was not an easy task for me so I decided to make little storybooks containing the factual information I wanted the children to remember about the animals we discussed. I found patterns like jellyfish, crab, seahorse, etc. and made several copies of each one. I colored the outside cover and gave the book a Title. Example: Sammy Seahorse or Jimmy Jellyfish. Then I decided what important facts I wanted to include in the book and made short, simple rhyming lines containing the facts. The books were 5-8 pages long and the kids got a kick out of hearing factual info in a fun way.

Beach Prop Box- I used a small durable plastic cooler, inside it I put, two beach towels, two or more size 10-14 children's swim suits, an empty sun-screen bottle, sun glasses, a bright colored hat (it is a good idea to do a head lice check daily, if hats are used), two or more empty plastic soda bottles (glue lids on for younger age children), & sand toys. The children in my class played with this both indoors and outdoors in the sand box. If you are really creative, and not afraid of sweeping up sand, you can place a small wading pool filled with sand inside your classroom. Place it on a plastic shower curtain to make clean up easier.

Make that display come alive! To make an interactive display area and play thing which covers all areas of development an aquarium is just thing. Stick two cardboard box's together and cut out the front and the top, paint the background blue and decorate with seaweed like effect. The children can make fish which can go on string (to stand behind and dangle over the top) or put them on sticks (sit in front and perform). To add to the reality treasure chests, dolphins, mermaids etc can also be made.

Each child is given 2 pieces of paper shaped like fish. Explain to the students that the fish they are going to make are very special fish that only eat words that begin with the letter "f" or the "f-f-f" sound. Make sure to phrase it that way and not say that the fish only eats f-words or you'll get some colorful answers! Once the class has brainstormed the words the students use a crayon to copy the words onto their fish. Once they have completed this they can paint over their fishes with a mixture of tempra paint and water (use 3-4 different colors for variety). You will still be able to see the words they have printed and when they dry staple the two sides together and stuff with newspaper and hang from the ceiling! I do this with kindergarten students and they love the writing the words that begin with f on their fish.

During an ocean unit I did this in my housekeeping/dress-up area:

I hung streamers around the area to give it a special divide from the rest of the room. Then I hung up a sign that said "Seafood Cafe". I made the area into a restaurant, provided menus, bibs, bills, money, cash register, pencils, and seafood. It was a wonderful time for them to pretend they were patrons, wait staff, dishwashers. Very fun addition ;)

For an under the ocean theme use a large appliance box. Turn this on its' side to aide the making of a submarine. Cardboard sheets with small boxes, tubes and plastic lids attached creates an onboard computer area. Add flippers, snorkels, wet suits also. An octopus made from old stockings can sit in the area guarding a treasure chest or holding books to share with the children about the ocean.

Octopi - Take a large sheet of construction paper (any color) starting at the bottom edge have children cut strips across the paper stopping about half way up. Next, have them draw circles on strips to make tentacles. Children can add a face to the upper portion that is not cut. We do a sea theme every year and thought I would pass on a few of our ideas.

The room is decorated by weaving crepe paper streamers (pale green/aqua, darker green/blue) over/under fishing line strung length of room a foot below the ceiling......when the a/c and fans are on, they move about and give the impression of being "Under the Sea".

Fishing net is hung down one wall and over a table - becomes the interest corner where we lace sharks jaws/teeth; seaweed; shells; sponges; dried seahorses, starfish etc; and any other flotsom and jetsam we have in the place. (As we are only 5 minutes from some fantastic beaches, these are easy to collect!)

An alternative to the net is to cover an A frame with paper, paint it a murky colour and create an undersea cave to put the interest table in.
