After you read the story have the children lay down on the rug and turn the lights low. Tell the children that you want them to listen for their names as they listen to the whales song. I say their name quietly as they rest. The children love it. After this activity you can have materials ready for the children to practice their name or draw pictures of the whales. The children wanted to hear the whales songs over and over again. Contact_FullName: rachel Contact_Email: jandrye@aol.com date:: 05/12/02 Area: ocean games Idea: This should be played anywhere the children have room to run. The children line up at one end of the room. You stand in the middle of the room and say "swim fishy, swim fishy swim my ocean..." When you end the phrase with the word blue, the children run to the opposite side of the room. Your job is to tag them. If they get tagged then they become a tentacle and try to tag the other children with you. If you end the phrase with a different color then they don't run. The last child tagged gets to be the caller/tagger for the next game. As a variation I tell them to run when the color called is one they are wearing.
ideaThis is an adapted version of "Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar" Have the children sit in a circle (you sit in the circle too). Pass around a toy fish (stuffed, plastic, etc.) while everyone says, "Who caught a fish in the big blue sea?" (use the child's name that was holding the fish when the previous chant ended for the next part) "(student's name) caught a fish in the big blue sea!" That student says, "Who me?" Class says, "Yes, you!" Student says, "Couldn't be!" Class says, "Then who?" Pass the fish again and repeat chant from beginning.
7-10-00FISHY, FISHY In this game have the children stand in a line and pick one child to be the fish. (or 2-3 depending on group size) Then have all the other children say" fishy, fishy may we cross your ocean?" The fish then says, "yes". The children all run across to the other side without being tagged by the fish. If they are tagged by the fish they then sit down where they were tagged and place their arms out. They are now the seaweed in the ocean. The seaweed can also help the fish catch the others trying to cross but, without moving (use arms only). The last one not tagged is the winner or the next fish. (I usually have them be the next fish and pick 2 friends to help... the kids will love it!)
5-20-00Octopus Arms Need Circle cutout (represent octopus head), 8 rectangles or patterns representing the octopus legs. In advance - number the legs - 1-8 On the octopus head - in sections- make dots to be matched to the legs. ... 3 The child will count the dots then find the corresponding leg number - the child will glue or staple the legs to the dots. Excellent for one-to-one correspondence - and number recognition.
ideaSea shell sorting: I copied a variety of seashell patterns and made some small, medium and large. Also of various colors. The children used these for sequencing small to large, counted how many of each, matched them, used them for making patterns and searched for them around the room, then counted to see how many they found.
5-7-00My preschool class loves a game we play using a box decorated like a puppy with an open mouth and construction paper bones of different colors. We sing a chant and "feed" the dog the correct color bone. During our study of the ocean, I thought of a new way to play using fish. I took Styrofoam containers used to hold hotdogs ( the kind you might get at a carnival or fast food place with a hot dog to go) and cut the top and bottom apart. This created two "boats". Next I cut out simple fish from all different colors of construction paper and gave one fish of each color to each child along with a boat. We spread the fish on the floor and sang this chant: "Fishy fishy, in the sea, jump in to my boat for me! Fishy, fishy in the sea, what color fish will you be?" Next I called a color and they had to find that fish and put it in their boat. We had a lot of fun with this and reviewed our colors at the same time!
4-29-00For teaching pre-schoolers shape recognition we play a game called Charlie over the Ocean. One child hides or closes their eyes and then the teacher selects a shape from a shape poster. The children then sing the song: Charlie over the Ocean, Charlie over the sea. Charlie over the Ocean find a shape for me. "Charlie" then opens eyes or comes out of hiding and selects a shape asking the question "Is it a ______?". remaining children reply "Yes/No it is/isn't a _______". Charlie continues to ask the question until the correct shape is selected. A new Charlie is the picked. You can use this game also for number recognition.
Date: 3-10-00Seafood Limbo I have a Hap Palmer song called the Disco Limbo. We just change it to the seafood limbo and have the children go under the pole moving like different sea animals. (Example: walk like a crab, slide like an eel, etc.) Extension: As the pole gets lower have students figure out which sea animal would have the easiest time getting under, which is smaller, flatter, etc.
Date: 2-29-00Instead of "The Farmer in the Dell" play: "The Dolphin in the Ocean". Substitute the farmer, his wife, the dog, the cat the mouse and the cheese for sea creatures such as: Shark, Jellyfish, Seahorse, Seashell, etc.
ideaGet a wooden dowel about 18 or 20 inches long. Tie a string on it. At the end of the string attach a small magnet. Make small paper fish (or whatever water creature you desire). Add a paperclip to each fish. Have the children fish with the fishing pole. This is good for taking turns and eye-hand coordination. Date: 11-21-99Date: 6-29-99During a unit on oceans, place a small ball of playdough in a baggie with various shaped shells (sea stars & sea horses are especially exciting!)for each child. Allow exploration of imprinting their shells onto the playdough to take place. Lots of vocabulary words can be built on during the activity, as well as spatial relations explored. Date: 3-14-99At the end of our beach unit, we had a beach party. We wore our swimsuits and while the hamburgers were grilling, I dug out the 6 foot wide baby gate, and we played volleyball over the gate with a balloon. The kids had a ball! Pirate's Treasure: Pirate sits on a chair in the middle of the circle, blindfolded, with his treasure at his feet. Selected child then has to creep up and try to steal the treasure without making a sound. If pirate hears him he must yell out "Yo ho ho"...and another child is selected.......if treasure is stolen and child resumes his seat, he yells out instead and becomes the pirate. 6-11-98 Name: Carol E-mail: apple@wantree.com.au A fun game we play outdoors on the grass is to put children into groups of four and ask them to join together to make an octopus with 8 waving tentacles. Lots of giggles as they try to work out how to do this so they can move around the yard without coming apart. The "waving tentacles" gets them every time! 6-11-98 Name: Carol E-mail: apple@wantree.com.au Play a fishy version of "Duck, Duck, Goose"....... Fish, Fish, Shark! 6-11-98 Name: Carol E-mail: apple@wantree.com.au Make pelican head base boards and loads of little fish (1 inch) in as many colours as you want. Children roll a colour die and a number die then select the appropriate colour/number of fish to go in pelican's bill. When all fish are gone....count up to see who has the most. Can be varied by making shark base boards and have same coloured fish with shapes on them: roll a number and a shape dice. 6-11-98 Name: Carol E-mail: apple@wantree.com.au Angelfish Number Game: Make up a base board with a trail of Angelfish swimming towards "Angelfish School" sign. In the fish randomly write numbers 1 - 6. Children roll a number die and move their counter to the next fish showing the number. 6-11-98 Get a large cardboard box (computer box) and paint it blue. Draw a shark's head (as if swimming towards you) on one side...with mouth opened wide! Paint it grey, cut out inside of mouth and add paper teeth. Using bean bags.....have children stand behind a line 2 yards away and tell them to feed the shark! I use this as an indoor activity by putting the box against a wall in a corner of the room.....each child gets three throws and must wait until the others are finished before getting their bean bags. Keep it to four children only and put out 3 x red, blue, yellow and green bean bags so they can identify their own when collecting. If you can make fish shaped bean bags it is even more effective. (I fill my bean bags with aquarium stones......can toss them into the washing machine, mice don't eat them, and they don't grow should they get wet. 6-10-98 Name: Robin E-Mail: jpmooar@fidnet.com
Buy several plastic fish, sharks, etc. Use a large blue sheet (the ocean) and put the plastic fishes under it. Have the children each hold up the sheet and then chant (name of child) Kelly, Kelly, dive under the ocean, and that child "dives " under the sheet and pickes out a fish. She comes out and tells everyone what they caught. When the fish are all caught they can put the fish on the sheet and have funbouncing them off. 6-9-98 Daylene Ocean Creature Fun! Give each child a picture of an ocean creature. Have the children tell you what kind of ocean creature they are holding. Next, tell the children to remember what kind of creature they have and then SIT on their picture. Tell the group that you are going to call out an ocean creature and if they have it STAND UP. For instance, you could say "I am looking for the person who has a shark." An extention to this game would be to have the child who has the ocean creature you are describing stand up and then move like that creature.
