Luau Art
Contact_FullName: Denise Contact_Email: dmofboe@aol.com Area: Luau Idea: We make Hawaiian print shirts and dresses. Have each child cut out a shirt or dress shape from construction paper. I pour tempra paint in shallow containers and have children dip plumeria flowers into the paint and press it onto the construction paper cutouts. They are cute displayed on a clothesline. I have them finish up on another day by gluing the clothes onto a large sheet of paper and then drawing in the rest of their body using multicultural markers. Note: If you don't have pumeria, you can use flower shaped sponges or any other real or artificial flower. Contact_FullName: Carol Contact_Email: Tahiraann@aol.com date:: 9-6-03 Area: Lua-art Idea: For the Hawaii idea I bought some of the plastic leis. Some the children received at the door, as I greeted them and then some of the I let them paint with putting them (the plastic ones) in the paint and then they would push them down on the paper to make patterns, and circles. Contact_FullName: Penny Contact_Email: Pennylane09@hotmail.com date:: 03/30/03 Area: Hawaii/Luau Idea: Pineapple Draw a pineapple outline and cut out squares of yellow tissue paper. Have the children glue them onto the pineapple. I also had them roll up green tissue paper into balls to glue onto the yellow squares. They so real, and cute too! They can color the top brown or green to finish the look.
7-23-00To make an easy hula skirt, take a brown paper bag and cut off top portion, then using scissors make strips up to the top portion leaving a 2-3 inch uncut space. Cut "skirt" to fit with about an inch over lap around the waist. Fold down the top edge to form a waist band and run yarn in between the fold , staple below yarn and then tie around the child's waist , it will gather and look real. Their part will be to paint the skirt green using sponges or brushes.
ideaBeach Towels Give the children a large piece of paper the shape of a towel. Have lots of bright colors of paint and let each child design her/his own towel. Hang these from a clothes line in the room to display.
4-30-00Sandy Footprints: Dip a child's foot in glue, then print onto paper. (Have a bucket of warm, soapy water and towels on hand). After a quick cleanup, the child can sprinkle sand on the glue. Allow to dry. Hang Ten: Cut out a surfboard shape from a large piece of cardboard. Cover with bright paper or paint. Children can pretend to surf the waves.
4-24-00For my Hawaii unit, my class made leis. Give the children colorful cut squares of tissue paper. Use a hole puncher to punch a hole in the middle of each piece of tissue paper. Let the children use plastic needles and put the tissue papers around a string long enough to fit around the child's head. When the tissue papers are on the string, the children fluff them up and they have their very own colorful Hawaiian lei.
Date: 1-31-00Volcano art- Tear a mountain shape from paper. Paint with a glue with used coffee grounds mixture. Add red colored coconut for lava.
Date: 1-25-00When I taught my Hawaii unit I had my kindergarteners make pineapples. I gave them a pineapple to trace and cut out. Then they used yellow and green tissue paper to crumple up and glue on the pineapple.
Date: 1-24-00For our Hawaiian luau, we are making grass skirts using green crepe paper and yarn. Cut several strips of the crepe paper and cut a piece of yarn long enough to fit around each child, like a belt. Have the children glue the crepe paper to the yarn and tie around the child when done. Now the children can do the hula with their own grass skirts.
