The kids really enjoy looking at the alphabet! Show items in circle time. I don't like many things in my room to look to store bought. So instead of buying a running alphabet chart. I first put the letter we are learning on the rug with masking tape. Example "Aa" really big so the kids can see it. Next we talk about all the people in our class whose name starts with the letter "A" and we write their name in the letter "A" Always start the Capital letter with a red marker and the rest of the letters I use a black marker. Next and last I have all the kids whose name start with that letter sit next to it and I take their picture. I always put them on the wall (eye level of course for the kids to see) and I write "Our class Alphabets" This project takes 26 weeks to complete but at the end it looks real nice and the kids not only know "Their" letter but their friends letters also. We do tactile letter pages for each letter of the alphabet. X is a hard letter to find. I have found in the hardware stores the little spacers used to hold ceramic tiles apart. They look like the letter x. To teach phonics here we use a system called "Jolly Phonics". Every sound in the alphabet has an action and a name. For example, 'A' is called Albert the Ant. The action is for the children to pretend that an ant is crawling up their arm and repeating "a..a..a..". It has proved so successful that nearly every school here uses it.
