Idea:

Collect leaves. Using watercolors, paint one side of the leaf. Press onto white paper. This leaves a beautiful print. I then paste onto colored paper for a "frame" .

Idea:

Have the children trace their hands onto construction paper. Make sure that the paper is the color of leaves such as red, orange, brown, green, etc. After they do that, cut them out and write their names in big, black letters on the handprints. Take several pieces of brown construction paper and create part of a tree. Then staple the handprints to the top of the brown construction paper as if they were leaves. At the bottom of the tree, create a big basket in which other leaves are.

I have been doing this activity since the fall of 1988, and it has always proven to be a big hit. The children bring in a new, white sweatshirt (usually purchased from a craft store at a nominal price) We collect different shapes and sizes of leaves that are still fresh (no crisp leaves) The children paint a leaf of their choice vein side up, with fabric paint in fall colors (orange, red, yellow and brown) They place the leaf on their sweatshirt, put an absorbent piece of paper on top of the leaf, and using a craft roller, roll the paper. When everything is removed, there is a perfect leaf print. It is an amazing sight to see the whole class in these sweatshirts on a field trip!!!

Idea:

Trace the child's forearm and fingers on brown paper for a tree trunk and branches. Cut it out if you like, glue it to white const. paper and sponge paint fall colored leaves. Even our youngest ones really get into it!

Idea:

Go on a nature hike to collect colorful leaves (it works best if you go a day after a rain so that the leaves are a bit flexible but not soaked). Inside have the kids draw a picture of a "winter tree" (no leaves). When they are done with that, they can glue on the leaves they collected in order to make it an "autumn tree."

Take coffee filters and cut into the shapes of leaves. Provide cups of liquid watercolors in orange, yellow, red, and brown. Have children use eye droppers to place watercolors on the filter leaves. The colors blend together for wonderful fall leaves. Create a tree trunk out of brown wrapping paper or butcher paper. Add leaves to the branches and also at the base of the tree. My 2 1/2 year olds loved this creation. Everyone was successful!

I purchased several white tiles from a hardware store(10-30 cents a piece). We went outside and collected leaves. Using double sided tape attach leaves to tile. Have children sponge paint around the leaf (use a ceramic paint-my kids wore gloves for this one because the paint can be difficult to wash off). When dry remove leaf and tape. Coat with a ceramics top coat. Hot glue ribbon around edges of tile, and also glue squares of felt to bottom. Add child's name and date. Makes a great coaster- they gave them as gifts for grandparents day!

Since our theme was families and it was fall, we went out for a nature walk to gather all different kinds and colors of leaves. We brought them back and used them to make collages of our families (ie. small round leaf for the head, longer wider leaf for the body and thin narrow leaves for the arms and legs). The kids had a blast and the parents liked them, too. This project combines art, science, and literacy since I had the children dictate to me at the end of the project something about their family.

Caterpillar on a Leaf.

Cut a leaf shapes out of different shades of green construction paper. Have different colored pom-poms (the ones about the size of a penny) Have the children glue on about eight pom-poms onto what ever color leaf they chose. They now have their caterpillar on a leaf.

In the fall collect a variety of leaves. At the woodworking table place a block of wood on the table then place your leaf on top. Cover your leaf with a small scrap of white fabric, or muslin. Use hammers or small blocks to bang on the fabric. The colors from the leaves comes out on the fabric. This also works with flowers.

Leaf printing using a brayer. Cover area with newspaper. Find large leaves with profound veins. Roll brayer in paint and coat back of leaf. Flip leaf onto paper and rub gently. Any age may find success in manipulating a brayer. Enjoy!
