We made stick horses for the children to pretend to ride. We had just come back from a field trip to a horse farm. I bought a roll of brown paper that is used to wrap packages in for shipping. Next I traced horse head shapes (2 for each child). I asked parents to bring in the cardboard rolls that are on the inside of rolls of wrapping paper. We did this during Christmastime, so there were plenty of rolls. Either the teacher can cut out the horse heads, or the children can. To hold the two horse heads together, several things can be done. The teacher can hot glue the heads together, or holes can be punched around the edges of the horse head shape and children can lace the holes with ribbon, or the heads can simply be stapled together. Next allow the children to color and decorate each side of the horse's head. Then give children newspaper and have them wad paper up and stuff the horse head. Last, the teacher can hot glue the cardboard roll to the neck of the horse. The kids really loved the finished product!

Talk to someone who owns horses and see if you can get some old horseshoes.  Have the children paint the horseshoes and make prints on heavy-duty construction paper.

It's hard to find horse shaped sponges, but never fear!!!  Buy the flat, dehydrated sponges from an art supply store.  Trace horse shapes on them.  Cut them out.  Let the children drop the dehydrated sponges in a bowl of water and watch what happens!!!  Finally, let the children sponge paint with the horse shapes :)
