Children love to do this I did it with my Preschoolers, I also made a book to send home and the parent were very happy.

Idea:

Cut various sized circles of green construction paper. Try to use 2 different shades of green. Alternating sizes and shades, glue circles together using same center point and overlapping slightly. Should look like a 3D lettuce for your bulletin "garden".

Idea:

First, I had someone draw vegetables and I photocopied them on white paper. The children then painted 5 or so different vegetables. After the paint dried I attached them to craft/popsicle sticks. The children then "planted" their vegetable in the "garden". (The garden consisted of a Tupperware container filled with potting soil.) You could use your sensory table, but I needed to be able to put our garden away because of the age I teach. We surrounded the container with a construction paper picket fence and put a sign up -"Welcome to our garden!" My toddlers and twos loved this project!

Idea:

After reading "Planting a Rainbow," supply various sizes of coffee filters, liquid watercolors and pipettes. Children can cut our flower shapes from the filters. Using pipettes, the children will squeeze colors onto the filters. They are excited to see how the colors travel. While they are drying, have the children cut stems and leaves. They then glue these to the coffee filters. Make a mural from these flowers. Children may add a sun, soil, etc. with markers. Please note: Be sure to put a lot of newspapers on the table.

Reusable Worm Art

You need: coarse sandpaper & yarn in various colors and lengths.

Stick the yarn to the sandpaper making a design. It can then be pulled off and redone. When finished place each child's paper and yarn in a Ziploc bag with a note to parents that it makes a wonderful traveling activity.

Idea:

This idea makes an adorable springtime bulletin board. I ask the parents to send in a baby picture and a recent picture of my students. Then we cut out large seeds out of light brown construction paper, stems and leaves from green paper and large flowers of all different colors. I use green and blue board paper for the background. Attach the seeds to the bottom of the board and attach a stem and flower up from the seeds. Then I attach the baby picture on the seed and the recent picture in the center of the flower. Adding to it a sign that says "PreK Garden", a watering can on the top left hand corner with hearts pouring out over the flowers like water. The finishing touch are the words..."Love Makes Us Grow". The kids love to see each others pictures and it never fails to make the moms cry when they come for the Mother's Day Tea.

Idea:

After the kids plant all sorts of seeds (we plant them in a wading pool full of soil) I save the seed packages and they can make a classroom collage. I have even at times saved them until the flowers and veggies come up and take pictures. I also take pictures of the kids planting. When all is developed, I let kids make a large classroom poster with seed packs and all the pictures and the parents love it! When it time to take it down, I cut a section (usually the section that involves their child) and send it home!

Foot Flower Have all the kids take off one shoe and sock. Help them paint the bottom of their foot whatever color they want their flower. On a piece of paper make a flower with their foot. Add a stem and a flower. I use this with my infants. It makes a cute mother's day card too!

We add silk flowers, flowerpots and different containers to our play dough area when working on the themes spring and gardening. The kids get a kick out of planting their flowers again and again and the play dough holds the silk flowers nicely.

Make a miniature garden cart using the scoop from laundry soap. Make a pattern for 2-inch wheels and let the kids trace and cut it out. Add lines for wheel spokes. Glue the wheels to both sides of the cup (open end facing up). The handle is the wheel barrel handle! Next, put dirt in the wheel barrel. Plant any flower you like (geraniums do well). Recycling is fun!

Zucchini art- I ask all the children to bring in a zucchini to school. I purchase a variety of materials that can be stuck into it and pushed on it. Examples toothpicks, then put raisons, mini marshmallows, gum drops, ion the toothpicks, stick pretzels, lollipops, gummy bears etc. the children use their creative ability to make what ever they want. Some call it their space creature, boat, airplane whatever. I display them for the day and let other classes come to visit our "art exhibit." I do this with my 4 year old class and they love it.

I love to watch a bulletin come to life when I give the children in our Pre-K classroom scraps of construction paper and glue and tell them to create flowers. They can tear the paper or cut the paper to make beautiful flowers. They glue the "petals" onto green construction paper stems they have torn or cut out. We have beautiful, tiny flowers and we have big, giant flowers. The flower garden is always beautiful. I cut green grass out of construction paper and staple it across the bottom of the bulletin and just watch the flowers bloom from it. We also add kites, birds and other "spring" items to have a great bulletin board! The children love to see their special flowers come to life.

This will cover two days of activity projects. Also can be for any age group. First get a big piece of paper, like blank newspaper or big sheets of white construction paper. Have the children paint it all green this will be the grass for our spring garden. The next day after it has dried completely. Let the children glue on green construction paper leaves and green pipe cleaners for the stems of their flowers. For the flowers use small or large muffin paper cups. This will give a 3-D effect and allow the classroom garden to come alive. You can add bugs, insects and animals to your garden if your class really gets into it.

Paper bag Flower Boxes Materials: Brown paper bag assorted construction paper scissors glue flower pattern glitter glue (optional)

For preschool age you should cut paper bag in half horizontally and make flower patterns ahead of time. Flowers can be as simple as cutting circles out of colored construction paper. Cut medium sized green strips for the stem. Have child open bag. The top portion of the bag should be cut into small strips before hand as well. This will serve as the "dirt". Place strips in bottom of bag. Then have child glue flower pieces together and glue to each side of the bag. I used glitter glue with my preschoolers and they just loved making their newly planted flowers sparkle!!

Magic Bean

I got this idea from Family Magazine.

At the bottom of a white piece of paper - glue on a lima bean. Then ask children to draw what they would like to grow from the bean. Some of my children drew dinosaurs, toys, houses, babies, and of course flowers. It is a great project to use the imagination!
