Idea:

During our unit on FROGS, we made our sensory table into a pond. We half filled it with water, added river rocks, some sand, plastic frogs. We made lily pads from thin, green craft foam, adding a artificial flower in the center of each lilypad. We used 1-1/2 inch thick styrofoam flat circles (they float really well!) and poked in artificial stems of plants and cattails for islands for our frogs to rest on. Add a few plastic insects for frog food & a plastic duck or two and you have an indoor pond.

Idea:

In the water table I cut out round lilly pads from craft foam and use them with small counting frogs. The foam floats and you can put the frogs on top of the lilly pads. To add a little math to the play I put dots or numbers on one side of the lilly pads. Children who are ready for more challenge can practice counting and younger children can have fun using plain side.

Paint the bottom side of a paper plate green and the top side red. When it is dry fold it in half so that the red is inside (mouth). Glue eyes on top and have the kids put two small dots for a nose. On the inside tape or glue a long red tongue made of construction paper. The kids can curl the tongue around a pencil to make it curly if they want to. The kids can use these as puppets when they sing.

We make paper plate frogs. I punch a hole in the middle of a paper plate with a large pencil. The children color the plate with bingo markers, crayons, etc., making sure to make a big mouth around the hole. The children color two oval, egg-sized eyes and these are stapled to the top of the plate. I cut out two legs, rounded at the top with webbed feet, about three inches high. The children color these and they are stapled on each side of the bottom of the plate. I stick a non-squeaking party blower into the hole and the children love going around the room blowing out their "tongues" to catch "bugs".

Last year I had A Un-frog-get-able first day of school. We read books about frogs, had leap frog races, had races wearing swimming fins. I had lily pads on the floor as you walked in the room. You can take this theme as far as you want to go with it, and the kids just love it. Have a great first day back!

To make a frog puppet the kids will love, you will need 1 piece of green construction paper, cut in a circle about the size of a paper plate. Fold it in half, and glue it on a stick. Then put a bigger size wiggly eyes, a cotton ball nose a long tongue (red). It looks really cool when you curl the tongue to! They love it!

We read "The Big Wide Mouthed Frog" book one day and leave it at the listening center with a tape the rest of the week. During the week we make our puppet. To create frog puppets out of pudding/gelatin boxes. Wrap each box with paper-otherwise the paint will not stay on the box. Cut box nearly in half width ways-leaving one long side connected still. Then half each child insert his/her hand into the box and paint it green. The next day, add accordion folded legs to bottom and eyes on top. For our eyes we used cotton balls with black paper eyes in the center for a more 3D effect. Add a curled up red tongue in the mouth and your set. We then get into a group and read the book together using our puppets to say the words. It is cute and a hit for the parents as well.

During our frog theme we put green Jell-O jiggler squares in our sensory table to be "lily pads" and then added plastic frogs. The toddlers really enjoyed it.

Camping frogs: Find a cute frog picture and trace it on green construction paper. (Just have an outline) Let the children use their thumbs and stamp black speckles on the frogs. Then do the "Five Speckled Frog" song. Another variation is to trace a cute frog outline on white paper, have the children use their thumb and black a stamper pad and make the eyes, then use green tissue paper and tear small pieces and glue on for the body. I always mix glue and water and the children "paint" their picture first and then put their torn tissue paper on the glue.
