Idea:

Take a bunch of flower pedals and place them in a large bowl. Cut out some contact paper into the shape of a flower. Let the children place the flower pedals on the cut outs. Once finished, used another piece of contact paper to seal it off so no flowers come loose. Add a steam cut out from green paper if you want.

Using coffee filters have the children color the outside of the filter with markers. Then fold the filter into in half 2 times and place it into a cup of water. When the colors blend together, take out of water and lay flat until they dry. When dry pinch the filter in the middle of the inter circle and using a pipe cleaners attach in the middle of the circle and you have a flower!

Idea:

Create lovely flowers with buttons and wire. The wire is the stem and the differently shaped buttons become the blooms. Younger children could use pipe cleaners and large buttons and older kids can use smaller buttons and florist or craft wire. Older children are quite creative with this simple idea. They sometimes decorate the buttons with acrylic paint, permanent marker or glitter. They also next different sizes of buttons to create an interesting look. We make up silly flower names as well. These make lovely bouquets in vases or stuck pieces of styrofoam (painted or plain).

Idea:

A great idea for fine motor skills during flowers week is making flower necklaces. Buy beads that are called sunburst beads, they look like flowers. These are available at Wal-Mart in my town. The children can string these beads along with other beads at your manipulative table.

Idea:

This lesson was about sharing, listening to directions, and counting our fingers. I did this in two stages.
On the first day, I traced all of the children's hands on red paper and labled their names on the back for the next day. I then cut out the hands for the next day as well.
I also typed up a set of numbers using the "72" size font from 1-5 inclusive. I had green stems and two leaves per flower cut out. We had small round stickers to use for a "ring" for out fingers.
First, each child was given a 1/2 sheet of black art paper with scalloped edges. They were then asked to paste on the stem, then the leaves, and then the hands (flowers). We then counted out fingers from 1-5. They were given one number at a time from one to five so that they could glue them onto the fingers. Care was taken so that they didn't cover the area where the "ring" would go on the ring finger. They then got to choose a "ring" (sticker) to place on the ring finger after they helped me to count their flower fingers from one to five. They were then asked how many fingers were on their hands....this was the frustrating part. Not all of them got the answer. We had to count several times before they understood the correlation between this counting activity and the question. But, eventually, they all got the answer. We will repeat this exercise again with another art activity using both hands so that they can answer the question, "How many fingers do you have, altogether?" We will see... :-)

I have my kindergarteners use a cupcake liner to make a flower. They press the liner flat and attach it to a stem and leaf. They glue the flower on to blue construction paper and add raindrops or the sun and bees or whatever they want. You can also use a picture of the children cut down to size to fit in the middle of the cupcake liner.

Idea:

Using a sponge bottle scrubber (the sponge is in strips making a ball and attached to a stick), have the children dip the sponge into a small bowl of paint. We provided the children with a choice of blue, red, purple, yellow, and orange. The children then tap their sponge on a large sheet of paper in the upper half. Then provide the children with a paint brush dipped in green paint and tell them to add a stem and leaves. The flowers turn out beautifully.

idea

Sunflowers... To make sunflowers, give each child a small paper plate and cut out yellow paper petals. You could have the children cut the petals out, depending on their age. Have children glue petals around the paper plate and then glue shelled sunflower seeds in the middle of the plate.
