Idea:

The little booklet is called Family Shapes. Each page has different sizes of rectangles, circles, triangles, or quarter moon shapes glued by children for figures of Dad, Mom, Child, Baby, Pets, House. Our children are from difficult family lives and this is a way to be safe about talking about families.

During our "Family Unit" we send home a Capri-Sun box (that we have collected over the summer). We have the parents cover them with construction paper, pictures of their child, as well as, pictures of their families. Encourage the parents to get very creative! They, then cover with clear contact paper. When the children bring them in we have show n' tell during our circle time and have the children tell us all about the people in their families. We then add them into our block center and encourage the children to have fun!

During the first week of school I ask the children to bring in a picture of themselves and a picture of their families. I then create a tree and place it on a wall near my sign in/out sheet. Once the pictures come in, I place the family pictures in the branches of the tree and it becomes a unique family tree. It also helps those children who are missing their mommies and daddies because they can go and look at their picture whenever they are feeling blue. The student pictures I use on a class board. I have the children write their name and then I place their picture next to it. Throughout the week, we add information about ourselves (our favorite color, favorite food, etc.) to this student board. It helps the children express ideas about themselves and it helps the other children get to know one another. I also include a picture of myself and my family because I'm apart of the class too!

This year we sent out a summer news letter asking families to send in a picture of their family. We are going to have the children add them to the bulletin board under the title "Our Families" This should help children with separation anxiety during those first weeks.

I ask the parents of my K3 students to send a picture of the child's family to school during the first week. Each child picks his/her favorite color of construction paper and we cut out a pennant shape and tape on the picture. Then the children tell me their favorite things about each family member and I write it on the pennant. We put some "fringe" on the end of each with a contrasting color of paper and hang our pennants on the wall. Seeing their family's picture every day makes the children feel at home.
