Contact_FullName: Richelle Contact_Email: myhomz4kidz@aol.com Area: community workers.....Mailman Idea: We save tissue box's (long type) to make like a mailbox with the slit on top. Then we paint them, we write our house address numbers on the side's. Each child gets envelope's and paper and they all write each other notes and address the envelope's. Then they take turns playing mailman, delivering the mail into each mailbox (tissue box.) You can also make a mailman hat from construction paper. Contact_FullName: Rozanne Contact_Email: rozsteverus@aol.com Area: community helpers Idea: Draw around a childs body and the let the children have plaster (band aids) and gauze and bandages to add to the body. Great for discussion on accidents!! Contact_FullName: Erin Contact_Email: ErinChristine2001@yahoo.com Area: Community Helpers-Art Idea: We used a pre-cut chef's hat on Bristol board. We let the children finger-paint with whipped cream on the hat and let them add real sprinkles to it when they were done. They dry nicely and look yummy! 11-5-00Make a community helper collage. Let the children look through magazines, newspapers, etc... and pick out community helpers. When they finish their collage, have them dictate a sentence about what type of community helper they would like to be.
10-7-00I take a large white piece of construction paper and cut out a large band-aid shape. I get two from a large sheet. Glue a piece of white paper towel in the center to resemble a band-aid. I then give this shape to the children, along with real band-aids. ( you can purchase design band-aids too) The children use their small muscle control to unwrap the band-aid and then peel and stick it to the large band-aid shape. They can use as many as they are able to peel and stick.
7-9-00For "Community Helper" week, our children made personalized Doctor Bags. Using black construction paper, teachers precut a doctor bag shape (older children cut their own bag). Children were then given various first aid items; example: band-aid, gauze, cotton, Q-tips, and hole punch circles that represented "pills." Children glued on the items. Each child's name was written on their bag using a silver pen (Johnny Brown, MD). Some children even drew "shots" on their bags, Cute!
5-18-00The carpenters hammer goes rap, rap, rap and the saw goes see saw see. He planes and he measures and he hammers and he saws to build a school for me. Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck, hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck, hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck, ERRRRRRRR! Hurry, hurry, ring the bell...Ding ding ding ding ding Climb the ladder,...climb, climb.... Use your ax...chop, chop.... Use your hose....SHHHHH...... Fire's all Gone!
2-16-00Doctors/Nurses art Trace a child's hand and part of arm on a piece of white paper. Allow child to color, then provide an assortment of band aids to apply on said appendages. I usually get some really cute stories to go with the pictures that I print on the bottom of the page.
Date: 1-30-00For a chef idea we used white poster board and tissue paper to make chef hats and white construction paper to make aprons with string. The kids love to dress up like little chefs and pretend to prepare a meal.
Date: 3-15-99When studying about postal workers, we made mail bags using 2 pieces of construction paper. Punch holes around the edges and let children lace them with yarn. Cut the yarn long enough to have some left to make a shoulder strap. I wrote US Mail on one side and "Zachary's" Mail Bag on the other. My students made deliveries to my aide and me all day long. Date: 12-1-98To make a chef puppet, use brown paper lunch sacks, wiggle eyes, and white construction paper for the hat, apron, and hands. (The teacher can make a pattern of the hat, apron and hands for future reference).
Date: 11-7-98For your police day, have the students make a "nightstick" out of a paper towel tube. The students simply paint it black. You could also make a police badge by cutting out a tagboard badge shape and then covering the pattern with aluminum foil. 10-4-98 Name: Kathy
Collect cancelled postage stamps, use envelopes (I get old pre-addressed ones from the office) and let the children decorate the envelope with the postagestamps and cancellation/date stamps. 7-30-98 Name: Laura E-Mail: P4TLJJ@aol.com
Cut a tooth pattern out of white sturdy paper. Allow the children to "brush their teeth" with toothpaste and real toothbrushes ( I get mine from the dollar store). 4-27-98 Name: Angie E-Mail: Ang2511@aol.com
For our police week, we line the children up against the wall, which has a big piece of newsprint paper taped to it. Then we trace the outlines of their bodies for our "line-up." Then they can decorate their own outlines any way they choose with whatever materials you provide. 4-13-98 Name: Jodi E-Mail: Jodi_Birdsall@bc.sympatico.ca
For an art activity relating to the dentist I have cut out a tooth shape from a piece of paper and the done string painting using dental floss. Or cut a tooth shape out of yellow paper and painted them using white paint and toothbrushes. 4-10-98 Name: Gretchen E-Mail: croland@kih.net To use with Doctor/Nurses: Make a doctor collage. Use construction paper or cut out a medical bag shape. Have students glue items such as cotton balls, tongue depressors, cotton swabs, band-aids, gauze, etc. on their papers. Ta da! Your own medical supplies. |
