Circus Games
Contact_FullName: beth light Contact_Email: beth@aol.com date:: 03/10/03 Area: Circus Idea: I had the children walk around in circles til they were dizzy. Then after that I told them to try to walk the tight rope. The lesson was on being the human cannonball then tight rope walking afterwards. Hahaha, silly me.
ideaClown Beanbag Toss Draw a large clown face on a piece of butcher paper, cardboard, or fabric. Collect several beanbags. Tape the clown face to the floor a few feet away from the clown. Have your children stand behind the line and take turns trying to toss a beanbag onto the clowns nose.
8-20-00One Elephant Went Out to Play What to Do: Put the tightrope (rope) down in the center of the circle. Have the elephant (child) to stand on the rope. Children sing the following song: One elephant went out to play on a tightrope string one day. He had such enormous fun; He called for another elephant to come. (First line of the song and the next three lines increasing the number of elephants until each child has a turn. Then sing the following verse) 5 (Or the number of children) elephants went out to play on a tightrope string one day they had such enormous fun, but the tightrope broke and they all fell down!
8-20-00Pin the nose on the clown. Use poster board to draw a clown's face with the nose missing. Tape poster to the wall. Blindfold each child when it's his/her turn. Use index cards to make a red nose for each child and write their name on the card. Place a piece of double-sided tape on the back. Depending on the child's age, turn him/her around 2-3 times and point the child in the right direction.
Date: 3-1-00Acrobat Letters Reinforce Letters by having acrobat children make letters with their bodies. For Example: Two children can make the capital letter "A" The children lay on the floor (heads touching) slanting - then they put their inside arms together to form the "A". My class loves doing this - even when it isn't Circus week.
Date: 2-29-00Ring of Fire Here is another variation to the hoops. I hang red streamers from the hoop. Let the children be lions and tigers jumping through the ring of fire. They really seem to like it.
Clown Day I buy the balloons that the clowns use to make animals. I blow them up (I used an air compressor) and give them to the children. They pretended to be clowns and make animals with the balloons.
Date: 6-1-99This is great fun as a outdoor activity. Have two or three large clown faces or Elephant face.(Laminated). Put a blown balloon for the nose of the clown or the trunk of the elephant. Place a spoon full of either shaving cream or whipping cream on the balloon and have the children shoot it off with water guns (if you allow guns). I use needleless syringes or small spray bottles. This can be a relay race or compete against a timer or just purely for fun.
Date: 6-1-99Make red circles out of construction paper, add a small piece of tape to the back and give the students"clown" noses-Have the children sit in a circle, close their eyes. The teacher will gently tape one student, that student will jump up and take someone's clown nose. Teacher says. . . . Open eyes, who is missing a clown nose? That child must guess who took it. 6-14-98 Name: Carol E-Mail: apple@wantree.com.au Throwing skills can be reinforced by two children holding a hoop whilst another throws stuffed animals through it..........they can be a trainer putting the animals through their paces! Balancing - bean bags to practice walking the high wire......need to be very sure of where stepping...carry a bean bag on your head across the beam......as you walk along a rope......round obstacles...... Throwing at a target.........paint a box any color except where you have drawn the elephant's face on one side....paint this Grey...and cut out the open mouth. Children could throw peanuts into the mouth to....feed the elephant. 6-13-98 Name: Carol E-Mail: apple@wantree.com.au "Moving" Language Cards: Make cards large enough to divide in half and have a silhouette of someone hopping etc on one side and the appropriate word on the other: these can be used for a myriad of purposes - writing centre, at mat time to perform, guess the action game (cover the word side) and whatever else you can think of! Circus Word cards: Similar to above - include the animals, performers, ringmaster, tent and props etc. 6-13-98 Name: Carol E-Mail: apple@wantree.com.au I made 1 - 10 cards for the bulletin board as follows: 1 - the Big Top 6 - seals balancing balls 2 - "dressed" Elephants 7 - snarling lions 3 - bare backed riders 8 - silly clowns 4 - on the high wire 9 - prancing horses 5 - tumbling clowns 10 - dancing dogs Opposites cards:
elephant - mouse for big - small hot dog - ice cream hot - cold clown - clown fat - thin clown - clown tall - short tent up - tent down popcorn in bag - empty bag full - empty trapeze artist - dog lying down high - low clown - clown sad - happy 6-13-98 Name: Carol E-Mail: apple@wantree.com.au Counting animals: Circle on large piece of card - number of animals e.g. Elephants Put some inside the circle......ask "How many elephants are inside/outside the circus ring?" Remove some to opposite in/out and ask "How many stayed inside the ring/left the ring?" etc. 6-13-98 Name: Carol E-Mail: apple@wantree.com.au Colouring sorting and matching: Cut out matching pairs of clown's hat........mix them up and have kids match.......use patterned paper to make it a little harder. 6-13-98 Name: Carol E-Mail: apple@wantree.com.au Ordering: I photocopied six different clowns - enlarged/ reduced them in size each time until I had 10 of each, coloured matching clowns same colours and kids order them by size......keeps them busy for quite a while. (Have also done this with dinosaurs - they love them.) 6-13-98 Name: Carol E-Mail: apple@wantree.com.au Concentration - make up a set of matching cards (ringmaster, lion through hoop, prancing horse, seal on a drum, big top, acrobats, clown, elephant, juggler, tightrope walker, wagons and what ever you can think of) - and away they go. Lotto - make up 6 boards 3 x 3 and put appropriate circus pictures or stickers in each square....matching cards.....all you need then are the players and a caller. I also have a clown game........ six clowns each with different coloured clothes........cut into 6 pieces (hat, head, upper body, lower body and big shoes) each with a number from 1 to 6 on it. Kids roll a die and select the appropriate piece.....first to make up the clown wins. Can play it that they have to get the pieces in order - head then shoes don't go together. Another is.....6 large head shapes plus pieces (hair, hat, eyes, nose, mouth,ears)......on a plain die draw these....kids put face together by rolling die and selecting appropriate piece. Make the features as outlandish as you want......all different so that each time they play they finish up with another clown. 6-9-98 Daylene Jumping Through The Hoop Get a hula hoop. Have the children line up and jump through the hoop like some circus animals do. Ask them to jump like different circus animals such as a tiger, an elephant, a lion. Have the children come up with their own animals and how they would jump through the hoop.
