The Lazy Caterpillar

" A lazy caterpillar

I want to be forever"

She said to herself,

" I'm lazy, but clever

On this leafy tree

I want to live

A butterfly I don't want to be!"

A friend of hers appeared

And said to her very clear,

"A butterfly you have to be my dear

A little cocoon you will build pretty soon, And for a few days, You will sleep in that room."

The lazy caterpillar

For a few days slept on her bed

And when she woke up,

Two wings she had instead.

She looked at her and what a surprise,

Now she can flight!

And was delighted with her colors so bright.

Very hungry she flew,

Showing her colors yellow, red and blue.

I write my poems in English and Spanish, since poetry cannot be translated verbatim, I try to write the same concept in both language. By doing this, the children, are able to share in the experience regardless of their dominate language.

If you are interested in the

Spanish version, let me know. I also illustrate my poems.

This is a wonderful caterpillar song that my Mom sang with me when I was small. I teach it to my preschool kids every year and they LOVE it.

Fuzzy caterpillar,

(wiggle both index fingers)

Wiggled up a tree.

(wiggle them up to the air)

He wiggled loong, wiggled short, then wiggled right at me.

(wiggle fingers with arms outstretched, then about 6 inches apart, then very close to your face) Hi there! (spoken, wave hello) I put him in a box.

(clap hands together)

Don't go away I said.

(shake finger as if scolding)

But when I opened up the box,

(open hands slowly)

There was a butterfly instead!

(cross hands at wrists and "flutter" your butterfly high over your head)

Let me know if this isn't clear.

I made up this song to go with our butterfly unit. I had the kids make a caterpillar out of green pom poms glued to a tongue compressor stick, its chrysalis was a small paper lunch sack, twisted at the top to represent the silk attached to a tree. After placing the caterpillar into its chrysalis and stapling it to a tree, we sang this song:

A Caterpillar's Nap

Little caterpillar sitting all alone, we need to find you a nice warm home. Spin your silk and hold on tight, it's time to tell the day, "Goodnight!" The days are many, the days are long, hold on caterpillar you must be strong. Oh (pause) Wait a minute! (pause) What do I see, a beautiful butterfly looking at me!

"When I Was A Child." co. 2000 www.annamoo.com

Caterpillar, Caterpillar,

moving up and moving down.

Caterpillar, Caterpillar, shake your hairy legs around.

Caterpillar, Caterpillar,

are you going into town?

Caterpillar, Caterpillar,

are you going to buy some shoes?

Caterpillar, Caterpillar

they must cost a lot for you!

Caterpillar, Caterpillar,

tell me what you're going to do?

(bridge)

You're so fuzzy, you're so slow,

I'm just a wondering - where you're gona go?

Caterpillar, Caterpillar,

are you hungry for some lunch?

Caterpillar, Caterpillar,

here's a pretty leaf to munch.

Caterpillar, Caterpillar,

If you're hungry here's a bunch!

Caterpillar, Caterpillar -

moving up and moving down.

Caterpillar, Caterpillar

shake your hairy legs around.

Caterpillar, Caterpillar,

you're the coolest 'Cat' in town!

Oh ya!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Song

(sung to the tune of 10 Little Indians)

On Sunday, 1 little egg, on Sunday 1 little egg, on Sunday 1 little egg, out comes a caterpillar.

On Monday, 1 red apple, on Monday 1 red apple, on Monday 1 red apple, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Tuesday, 2 yellow pears, on Tuesday 2 yellow pears, on Tuesday 2 yellow pears, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Wednesday, 3 purple plums, on Wednesday 3 purple plums, on Wednesday 3 purple plums, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Thursday, 4 red strawberries, on Thursday, 4 red strawberries, on Thursday, 4 red strawberries, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Friday, 5 oranges, on Friday 5 oranges, on Friday 5 oranges, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Saturday, too much food, on Saturday, too much food, on Saturday, too much food, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Sunday, 1 green leaf, on Sunday, 1 green leaf, on Sunday, 1 green leaf, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

In his cocoon, he goes to sleep, in his cocoon, he goes to sleep, in his cocoon, he goes to sleep, that’s what the caterpillar does.

Out comes a butterfly, out comes a butterfly, out comes a butterfly, isn’t that a great surprise!

This is a song my nursery class love to do when we have read the "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"

There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle,
There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle,
There's a tiny caterpillar, a tiny caterpillar, a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle. (children do wiggling action for this verse)

There's a big fat caterpillar on a leaf, munch, munch, etc (munching action)

Caterpillar/Butterfly Play

Provide each child with a scarf. The children lay down on their scarves and then wriggle around like caterpillars trying to keep the scarf under them.

Teacher sings: (Wheels on the Bus melody)

The caterpillars are wriggling around, wriggling around, wriggling around. The caterpillars are wriggling around, all around the yard.

(children roll into a ball and cover their heads with scarf) The caterpillars are building a cocoon, building a cocoon, building a cocoon. The caterpillars are building a cocoon all around the yard.
