I made up this song to go with our butterfly unit. I had the kids make a caterpillar out of green pom poms glued to a tongue compressor stick, its chrysalis was a small paper lunch sack, twisted at the top to represent the silk attached to a tree. After placing the caterpillar into its chrysalis and stapling it to a tree, we sang this song:

A Caterpillar's Nap

Little caterpillar sitting all alone, we need to find you a nice warm home. Spin your silk and hold on tight, it's time to tell the day, "Goodnight!" The days are many, the days are long, hold on caterpillar you must be strong. Oh (pause) Wait a minute! (pause) What do I see, a beautiful butterfly looking at me!

(sung to "Oh I wish I were a little bar of soap"

Oh, I wish I were a little butterfly.

Butterfly.

Oh, I wish I were a little butterfly.

Butterfly.

I would go zoom, zoom, zoom.

All around the room.

Oh, I wish I were a little butterfly.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Song

(sung to the tune of 10 Little Indians)

On Sunday, 1 little egg, on Sunday 1 little egg, on Sunday 1 little egg, out comes a caterpillar.

On Monday, 1 red apple, on Monday 1 red apple, on Monday 1 red apple, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Tuesday, 2 yellow pears, on Tuesday 2 yellow pears, on Tuesday 2 yellow pears, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Wednesday, 3 purple plums, on Wednesday 3 purple plums, on Wednesday 3 purple plums, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Thursday, 4 red strawberries, on Thursday, 4 red strawberries, on Thursday, 4 red strawberries, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Friday, 5 oranges, on Friday 5 oranges, on Friday 5 oranges, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Saturday, too much food, on Saturday, too much food, on Saturday, too much food, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

On Sunday, 1 green leaf, on Sunday, 1 green leaf, on Sunday, 1 green leaf, that’s what the caterpillar eats.

In his cocoon, he goes to sleep, in his cocoon, he goes to sleep, in his cocoon, he goes to sleep, that’s what the caterpillar does.

Out comes a butterfly, out comes a butterfly, out comes a butterfly, isn’t that a great surprise!

This is a song my nursery class love to do when we have read the "The Very Hungry Caterpillar"

There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle,
There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle,
There's a tiny caterpillar, a tiny caterpillar, a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle. (children do wiggling action for this verse)

There's a big fat caterpillar on a leaf, munch, munch, etc (munching action)
There's a pretty butterfly on a leaf, flutter, flutter, etc (fluttering action)

This song can be used with the Eric Carle book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" The Little Caterpillar Sung to (Itsy, Bitsy Spider)

The little caterpillar crawled up into a tree,
Spun his cocoon and slept so quietly,
All through the winter he didn't make a sound,
He dreamt of his new life when he'd be flying all around.
While he was sleeping the snow did gently fall,
Winter came and went, then her heard the robin's call,
"Come on Mr. Butterfly, out of your cocoon
Spread your wings and fly for me, while I sing my tune.

Another song about caterpillars is Caterpillar (sung to Row, row your boat)

One caterpillar ,two caterpillars, three caterpillars today.
Four caterpillars, five caterpillars eating all the day.
One cocoon, two cocoons, three cocoons today.
Four cocoons, five cocoons sleeping all the day.
One butterfly, two butterflies, three butterflies today.
Four butterflies, five butterflies, flying, flying away.

There was a caterpillar. It wiggled up a tree.
It wiggled long, it wiggled short, it wiggled right at me!
I put him in a little box, don't go away I said.
But when I opened up the box, he was a butterfly!
I could never make one, even if I tried.
Cause only God in Heaven can make a butterfly!

A fuzzy caterpillar wiggled down a tree.
He wiggled long, he wiggled short, he wiggled right at me.
I put him in a box. "Don't go away," I said.
But when I looked again I saw a butterfly instead.
Now I could never make one, even if I tried.
Cause only God in Heaven, can make a butterfly.

This is a second verse to the fuzzy caterpillar song:

Wiggly little tadpole Swimming in a lake.
He wiggles here, he wiggles there, He wiggles like a snake!
Put him in a jar, "Don't go away," I said.
But, when I opened up the jar - a hopping frog instead!
I could never make one, Even if I try.
Hopping frogs are made by God, just like the butterfly!

Caterpillar/Butterfly Play

Provide each child with a scarf. The children lay down on their scarves and then wriggle around like caterpillars trying to keep the scarf under them.

Teacher sings: (Wheels on the Bus melody)

The caterpillars are wriggling around, wriggling around, wriggling around. The caterpillars are wriggling around, all around the yard.

(children roll into a ball and cover their heads with scarf) The caterpillars are building a cocoon, building a cocoon, building a cocoon. The caterpillars are building a cocoon all around the yard.

(children pick up their scarf and fly with it) The butterflies are flying around, flying around. The butterflies are flying around, all around the yard.

Butterfly Hunting (fingerplay)

With a net I go hunting
To catch a butterfly.
When he's caught I turn him loose,
To fly back to the sky.

Here's a song when we do insects:

The fuzzy little caterpillar went up into a tree,
spun his cocoon and then he went to sleep.
While he was sleeping he dreamt that he could fly,
when he woke up (sigh) he was a butterfly.

A-hunting we will go, A-hunting we will go,
We'll catch a butterfly
And put it in a box,
Then we'll let it go!
