Back To School Book Suggestions
Contact_FullName: Helen Contact_Email: MrsHMLong@hotmail.com Area: Back-to-school: Books Idea: I love to read "First Day Jitters" to my class on the first day of school. It's about someone who lolly gags getting up for the first day and has to be pushed and prodded. Great fun in the end when you finally see the entire character and she turns out to be... are you ready for this? The TEACHER!!! :)
The other book I love to read several times at the beginning of the year is "Those Mean & Nasty, Downright Disgusting Germs!" book. It's published by Redleaf press but I got another copy thru Amazon.com this past summer. It's written in English AND Spanish. The children love to say a loud, "EEEEEWWWWWW..." as I turn the page and show the germ. I then take that follow-up time to talk about good not spreading germ habits :)
I like to start my year by reading "The Kissing Hand" by Audrey Penn. It is a story about a young raccoon named Chester whose mother shows him a special way to remember her when they are separated. In our program, both parents and children attend on the first day. We do a project where child and parent each make a handprint on a piece of paper and then stamp a heart print on top of each of their hands.
Read the book Mrs. Bindergarten's Kindergarten to the children during circle time. Go over the animals in the book on a dry erase board. Then, have the children make up a name for themselves using an animal. For example, Mary Monkey or Fred Fox. The kids love this activity and it gives them a chance to learn each other's names in a fun way! For a follow-up activity, the children can make a name tag using the animal they chose.
