Idea:

Sing with Energy and Enthusiasm, it’s an ACTION song!!

Polar Bear Hug

(words) (actions)

Forty years on an ice berg: flash ten fingers four times

Over the ocean wide: mime the water/wave with 1 arm

Nothing to wear but pajamas: from your toes to your nose, mime pulling up your pjs

Nothing to do but slide: flat hands slide down in front of you and then forward when you reach the bottom

The wind was cold and icy: "cold" in sign language is to shiver shake your fists very close to your chest. For icy, hug yourself and rub your upper arms

The Frost began to bite: Nip your arms with your fingers

I had to hug my polar bear to keep me warm at night: Reach out and hug someone!!

To keep me warm at night

Sing the song with the actions through once, then take out the words to one line each time, starting at the top, you repeat it only doing the actions of the omitted words, you can do it with out making any noise, but with preschoolers I usually hum the lines. To keep things interesting you can do each verse a little different, LOUD, soft, slow, fast, cowboy, deep voice, high voice. You can go all the way through humming to the very last verse, and then repeating the song one last time with all the words, or you can shorten it by ending on humming all but the last line.

I can’t remember where I heard it first, but it’s got to be my all-time favorite!!

Idea:

During the Winter we talk, learn, play, and explore cold places like the artic. One of the ways we did this was trough song.

It goes something like this,

Walking through the artic

(children echo)

And what do think I saw...

(children echo)

A great big polar bear and he said "stand up"(children stand up) "and shake, shake, thisa' way, shake, shake thata' way, shake, shake, thisa' way and then sit down."

I used this song as a activity in group time with my 4 and 5 year olds they really liked the movement. After they learned the song and movements I added instruments (shakers/drums).

I also went around and asked each child what they saw in the Artic. Boy did they have fun with that part!

Idea:

I'm a Little Penguin

(Sung to I'm a Little Teapot)

I'm a little Penguin, in the sea

I can swim as fast as can be

When I catch a fish just look at me

I'm as proud as I can be

I'm a little Penguin on the ice

I think cold is very nice

Then I hop around first once, then twice I think ice is very nice.
