Idea:

Here's a new twist on "who stole the cookie": Play "Who took the apple from the apple tree? chant and clap as you pass an apple from child to child

chant:

(group) who took the apple from the apple tree? "Johnny" took the apple from the apple tree!

(child) Who Me?

(group) Yes you!

(child) couldn't be

(group) then who took the apple from the apple tree? (child then passes the apple to the next child and play continues until all have had a turn!)

After everyone has had a turn, have an apple snack and read your favorite apple story! So much fun!! Children will develop language and memory skills as well as learning to take turns!

Idea:

Last year we had such fun doing this apple math idea. First we had each child lie down on floor. We took lots of apples and measured how tall each child was in apples by lying the apples along side each child on the floor. We even had the children measure the teachers. Then each child drew their height in circles (representing apples) on a large piece of butcher paper (rote counting activity). We then graphed them by drawing a line across the top of each apple line. Finally we placed their actual height on the "how we grow" chart. We had lots of laughs! We even estimated how tall in apples each one might be after the first few children went. We hung the chart in the hall. GREAT PARENT PLEASER!

Idea:

Use metal juice lids (not sharp) cut out apple shapes that will fit inside the lids, with a marker write the first letter of each child's name in your class--K (Kyle) make a separate apple lid for each child. cover lid with contact paper and stick a Velcro dot to the back. Make a basket with construction paper and stick the back with Velcro dots. place lids and basket onto a felt board and use as letter recognition as the child chooses a letter apple lid and picks it from the tree and places it in the basket. My 2-3's love this:) Have fun!

Idea:

The teacher "hides" different color paper apple around the classroom (red, green and yellow). The teacher has a basket for each color apple. Each child is asked to find an apple and put it in the correct basket. This activity is fun while helping children focus to find items. It also helps sorting skills.

Idea:

We play this game on Johnny Appleseed's birthday (September 26) One child closes her eyes while someone sitting in the circle hides an "apple seed" ( a brown pom-pom) Everyone in the circle puts their hands behind their backs. The child who had her eyes closed is then asked to guess who is holding the apple seed. We give her an empty watering can and she goes up to someone in the circle, pretends to water him, and says "Grow, apple seed, grow!" If the child is holding the apple seed, he gets up and pretends to be a growing tree! If not, she gets two more guesses.

Idea:

Take red, yellow, or green construction paper and cut out shapes of apples. You may want to laminate them. Then, put tape on the back of them and place them on the floor. Have the kids hop from one apple to the next. This game is called the "Apple Hop."

Idea:

Make apple work mats. (I drew a big apple on either red, yellow, or green construction paper.) Then have the students use raisins as apple seed counters. Help them come up with apple seed story problems and how many seeds need to go with that apple. You could also have a number written on the apple (put this in a center) and let the children count out the correct number of "seeds" that corresponds with that number.

During my apple theme, I read the book "Ten Apples Up On Top" Then I write the number or children on slips of paper (i.e if there's 20 kids in the class I write 1-20 on different slips of paper). Each child picks a slip of paper out of a hat, bag, box...or whatever you have handy. They have to identify that number. I have a bunch of pre-cut small apples that they then have to count out the number they chose. I take a Polaroid picture of each child's face and they glue it on the bottom of a 3' x 18' piece of cardboard. Then the child glues on the apples on top of their head. I then laminate and put together with rings (in any order, not necessarily numerical order). We then go thru and count how many apples each child has on top. They each get to bring it home to share with their family.

This is a great project to help with number identification and counting.

Large Motor "Worm" Through the Apple

Children stand in a line with feet apart. One child is the "worm" and crawls thru the "apple" (children's feet). When the child reaches the end the next person in line becomes the "worm".

Way Up High In The Apple Tree

A new spin on an old finger play!! Begin by having red, yellow, or green socks rolled up. The teacher is the apple "tree" and holds the "apples" (socks) up in the air. Then all join in saying the finger play: Way up high in the apple tree, 2 little apples smiled at me. (teacher smiles) I shook that tree as hard as I could, (children "shake" tree) Down came the apples, mm mm good!! (drop the "apples")

Take turns letting the children be the apple tree.

Each child brings in an apple. The class counts them, sorts the different colors or sizes and then graphs by color and/or taste. Next lay each child down and line up apples next to them and count how many apples tall everyone is then record and display.

We play "hot apple" when we have apple day. This is like hot potato. We use an apple shaped bean bag and the children have to think of different ways to eat apples when the apple is thrown to them. This is fun and exciting for the kids.
