Contact_FullName: Cherlyn Contact_Email: ccherlync@yahoo.com Area: Thanksgiving - Food Idea: I teach 3 yr. olds and instead of having all the traditional foods associated with Thanksgiving, we had a Feast of Favorites. A few weeks before our feast I asked each child what his/her favorite food was and how they make it. I copied these down verbatim. Then I asked the parents to send in a dish of their child's favorite food while I made up a menu of our feast including 'cooking' instructions. We had a blast! We ate chocolate donuts, shredded wheat, several dishes of macaroni and cheese and even some pumpkin pie. It was a hit and the menu became a memento to send home. Contact_FullName: Melissa Contact_Email: miswoods00@verizon.net date:: 11/18/03 Area: Thanksgiving--snacks Idea: Make Your Own Stuffing: For Thanksgiving, we let the kids experiment with making "stuffing." We filled several bowls with plain croutons slightly crushed, and let the kids sprinkle in different seasonings such as garlic or onion powder, celery seed and dried parsley. Then the kids used a squirt bottle filled with water (the picnic-style ketchup and mustard squeeze bottle worked best or a turkey baster and bowl of water). Then they stirred, added more spices or water and some of them even tasted the stuffing. The kids absolutely loved this activity since they were able to "cook," and it's a great activity for sensory experiences and fine and gross motor skills. Contact_FullName: Diane Contact_Email: bdtliv@msn.com date:: 02/17/02 Area: Thanksgiving Snack Idea: We did this with my son's class. Each mom brought the ingredients of having a turkey dinner. One mom that is a teacher at our high school used their oven and cooked a turkey. We had mashed potatoes (but no butter/gravy). We made up no bake pies. Rolls, pickles and some of the basic items. The kids made up anything that had to be made up. I believe there was a Jell-o salad made up with whip cream and power dry Jell-0. The table was set with table cloths and little tiny pumpkin candles and they turned out the lights and the kids said a prayer (in a public school) yes! Then the kids ate in the dim day light of the room. Something they will always remember. Contact_FullName: Penny Contact_Email: penny@sbshelp.com date:: 10/3/01 Area: Thanksgiving=Snack Idea: Edible Turkey's-Each year we make edible turkey's for each child to eat or take home. Each turkey will need 1 Oreo cookie, one chocolate covered cherry, five candy corns, one butterscotch baking chip, one red hot candy and chocolate icing. Take 1 Oreo cookie, separate it and remove the white filling. You may need to help the children or already have this done before starting. The Oreo break very easily when trying to separate. One Oreo cookie half is the base which you place a chocolate covered cherry on with the icing. Then take the other half of the Oreo cookie and attached it to the back of the cherry with the icing so the candy corn can be attached (points down for the feathers). You will need 5 pieces of candy corn. Next take a butterscotch chip and attached with frosting for the head and a red hot candy and attached to the butterscotch chip for the gobbler. You now have an edible turkey. I can't tell you how many compliments I get from the parents each year when these are made! The kids love them too!
11-18-00Sugar Cone Cornucopia's- Instead of just a regular shaped Sugar cone filled with goodies, why not shape the cone into a real looking cornucopia? Start by boiling a pot of water. You will need the steam to make the shape. Take a regular sugar cone and place over the steam until pliable. Do not let it get mushy. as it starts to "soften" place the pointy part of the cone over the edge of the pot so it takes a bended shape. Do not let the cone get wet. once it is shaped, place it on wax paper and let it dry. You will have neat little curve to your cornucopia! =)
11-4-00At the youth center where I work, the budget is limited, therefore for our Thanksgiving Feast we provide finger foods. ex: veggies & dip, apples & dip, various crackers, finger Jell-O, etc... all are served from a sugar cone cornucopia. Enjoy!
9-9-00A tasty recipe for No-Bake Pumpkin Pudding To make one individual serving per child, mix two tablespoons pumpkin pie filling, two tablespoons marshmallow crème, and one tablespoon whipped topping. It is fun for the kids to measure the ingredients themselves and mix this tasty pudding. 8-23-00Turkey Cookies - you use Keebler striped cookie, a star chocolate candy, and a caramel. Put the star candy as the feet. Then the caramel (sq) as the body, then the corn candy as the head and the feathers is the Keebler cookie. You will need to place caramel in microwave-safe wax paper on high 5-10 seconds until soft so all the items will stick while making the turkey. ideaThis is a fun Thanksgiving activity. You start with the Rhodes dough that comes roll shaped. You need two rolls per child. Take the first roll and just put it on the tray this is the body of the turkey. Take the second roll and with a rolling pin roll it out flat. With a butter knife have the child cut the flat circle in half. With one half of the circle roll it into a snake shape and this is the neck and head of the turkey. With the other half of the circle, cut with a knife to make the feathers. When you have all the parts of the body done, have the children brush on a beaten egg white. This makes it shinny and it also helps it to stick together. Optional touches are sliced almonds on the feathers, and coarse salt. Bake the turkeys at 400 degrees for 12-15 minutes. You don't need to worry about letting them rise. When your turkey is done, place 2 pretzel sticks in the bottom of the turkey for the legs. Date: 12-1-99ideaA variation of the Friendship Stew is Sharing Mix. I invite each family to send a finger-food type of snack that can be added together at circle time to create a trail mix. The Sharing Mix then get divided into Ziploc bags and sent home for all to enjoy. The kids think it is super cool! Date: 11-23-99ideaLast year while working with two year olds we made bagel turkeys. For each child you'll need a bagel, 7 lollipops, and 3 candy corn. The bagel acts as the turkey's body. Poke 2 lollipops through the base of the bagel as legs so it will stand up. Then use the remaining lollipops as feathers poking out of the top of the bagel. Just above the hole in the bagel we poked in 2 candy corn as eyes and 1 candy corn as the gobble. The kids had fun making this edible project and afterwards we toasted and ate our bagels with jelly, butter, or cream cheese! Yum!
