Using a large shamrock tracer trace one one on green construction paper and another on clear plastic vinyl. Cut out, then hole punch around the edges. Students use yarn to lace the edges together. Stuff with a few gold coins or clover confetti before finishing with a bow. We have also made these for Valentine's Day filled with candy hearts. Patrick's Day -- art Idea: Before class cut a medium sized potato in half and carve out a simple shamrock shape with a paring knife on each half. The children will use this to stamp out potato prints with green paint. To make a handle for the children to hold on to, take a chunk of potato from the top on the right and left side. What is left in the center serves as a handle and works quite well. I briefly tell them that Ireland is known for growing potatoes and we are using them to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Contact_FullName: Kelly Contact_Email: KellyGirl898@aol.com Area: St. Patrick's Day - Art Idea: Paper Party Hat: Take a White piece of paper (Construction or Painting Paper work good) fold it into a cone shape and either tape, staple or glue it. then using a hole puncher make 2 holes at the bottom of the hat (one on left side, and one on right side) stick reinforcements over the holes on the inside then tie a piece of yarn to each hole (this will be used to tie the hat onto the childs head). then write HAPPY BIRTHDAY and childs name on the hat then let the child decorate the hat with Birthday stickers, confetti, glitter, stampers etc... let dry and they can wear the hat for a special Birthday Party at the end of Birthday Theme week. you may also use this idea for New Years, St. Patrick's Day etc... Contact_FullName: Debi Contact_Email: bbrotherton@earthlink.net Area: St. Patrick's Day Hats--Craft Idea: Actually, I didn't think this up myself--I saw it done at my child's Pre-K. You take green formed plant paper (the kind of thick shiny paper that is usually used to decorate the outside of a flower pot--it's pressed or shaped in a flower pot shape--hard to describe--I got some at Michael's for .99 cents each) and you turn it upside down. You can then use ribbon or construction paper to put a hat band around the hat. You can cut a square out of construction paper or any kind of paper or craft foam sheets to make a buckle--you could even glue glitter on the buckle. For a cute touch, you can even take a pipe cleaner and glue it in the hat band and then glue a shamrock to the top of the pipe cleaner so that it moves and sways when the person wears the hat. You would have to trim the "brim" to make it round/circular instead of pointed. They make really cute St. Patrick Day Hats. If you use black flower pot paper, you can make pilgrim's hats. Contact_FullName: Lisa Contact_Email: jimmynlisa@thegateway.net Area: Art-St. Patrick's Day Idea: Shamrock wands: I gave the kids a cutout of a shamrock and they put glitter on it, added green streamers to the end. Once it was dry I stamped to a straw or you could stapled it to a paper towel roll they have painted green or decorated or St. Patty's day. The kids loved it Shamrock glasses: I made the kids glasses buy using a pair of 3-d glasses for a pattern. I traced onto green poster board and then in the holes where you look out I put green saran wrap. The kids loved them! They wore these along with the hat idea below and used their wands for a St. Patrick's Day "parade" on the playground. Leprechaun hat: I cut the center out of a paper plate and hot glued a paper bowl around center edge. The kids painted them green and then added a black strip of construction paper and a yellow construction paper buckle, soooooo cute! I used yarn to secure around neck like a b-day hat is done. I used toilet paper rolls and filled them with candy and party favors. used green tissue paper and wrapped around, twisted the ends and tied with green ribbon. Added St. Patrick's day stickers for decoration and that was a cute party surprise for the kids. Contact_FullName: Tiffany Contact_Email: tskala21@yahoo.com Area: St. Patrick's Day: Art Idea: Gold Coin Necklace: Materials needed: gold/green ribbon, white construction paper, gold/yellow paint, gold glitter, paintbrushes, individual pictures of children Procedure: The teacher cuts the construction paper into large circles. The children paint the circles with the paint and sprinkle with glitter. After they dry, the teacher punches a hole at the top for the ribbon to go through. Then, the teacher cuts the picture of the child to fit the gold circle and glues it on. The teacher can write on the back: "I'm more precious than gold!" and the child's name and date. Another option is to turn this necklace into a magnetic by just purchasing the magnetic strips and gluing them on the back of the gold coins. Contact_FullName: Tiffany Contact_Email: tskala21@yahoo.com Area: St. Patrick's Day: Art Idea: Glittering Gold: Materials needed: rocks, gold paint, gold glitter, paintbrushes, trays Procedure: Each child will be given two or three rocks to paint gold. Contact_FullName: Beth Contact_Email: DakiniRawk@aol.com Area: St. Patrick's Day Art Idea: BEARDED LEPRECHAUN: I got this idea from a Kindergarten teacher at my school. Cut green leprechaun hats out of green construction paper. add hat to face. Have the children draw a face for the leprechaun. Cut 5 or 6 long strips of orange construction paper. Have children apply this over the outside of the bowl. Let this dry for 3 Days. The children can paint and add gold foil covered candy.
3-12-01Marble painting clover Cut out a clover shape on white construction paper. Place it in an aluminum pan or copy paper box lid. Put several small spots of paint in each corner about the size of a half dollar. You can use light green, dark green, gold and yellow individually or combined. Place the marble in the center of the clover and allow the child to tilt the pan so the marble goes through the paint spots across the paper. If the children are under 4 you may need to hold one side of the pan while the child holds the other or the marble may end up against the wall. You can also sprinkle with gold powder when done. A golf ball instead of a marble works well too.
3-12-01Cut strips of construction paper to make a band to fit around child's head. Lay flat on table. Dip cookie cutter shapes of shamrocks, leprechauns, gold pot, and rainbows in paint and stamp onto band of hat. When dry, tape ends to form hat band. These "stamps" can also be used on paper folded to make greeting cards.

Glue shamrocks to Popsicle/craft sticks. Let dry. Take small amounts of play dough (green) and place in the bottom of a child's size drinking cups. Have children place the Popsicle sticks firmly in the play dough so that the shamrock is "planted" in the cup. Voila!! Your class has "Glittering, Growing Shamrocks!" You may also have them color smaller shamrock patterns to glue on to their cups.

Print one side of the paper, let dry. Fold the paper into "tube" shape, with the prints on the outside. Let the child staple ends, tape middle. Staple three strands of green crepe paper at the bottom Put two hole punches at the top and have the child string through. Beautiful March Windsocks!!!
Date: 3-1-00Can stamping Take three soup cans and duct tape them together in a cluster. Then you use it as a stamp in green paint and it will come out as a shamrock. Note: if you put damp paper towel down on the paint tray first it helps absorb some of the paint and it works like a stamp pad then.
10-17-00St. Patrick's Day Hat Purchase on Chinet paper bowl for each child. Let children paint bowls green. Let dry and then hole-punch two holes and loop with sewing elastic to keep on their heads.
