Contact_FullName: Sandy Contact_Email: ericstevvermontel.net Area: Black History month-books Idea: A book suggestion for black history month is "Daisy and the Doll". This is based on a true story of a black girl in an otherwise all white class. Contact_FullName: Tanisha Contact_Email: tish3871@aol.com Area: Black History Month-Misc Ideas Idea: Garrett Morgan, a black inventor, invented the traffic light. Discuss rules for driving and experiment in the sand table or block area with cars driving any way without rules. Introduce a traffic light identifying the red, yellow, and green lights and their functions. Place a traffic light in those areas and watch students create rules of their own for safer "driving." Contact_FullName: Tanisha Contact_Email: tish3871@aol.com Area: Black History-misc Ideas Idea: Connect the written word and print by asking your students about the famous African Americans' they are familiar with and recording their responses on an experience chart. If the students get stumped help them with ideas of your own like Bill Cosby, Colin Powell, Martin Luther King, Puffy Combs, etc. Contact_FullName: Tanisha Contact_Email: tish3871@aol.com Area: Black History-misc Ideas Idea: Elijah McCoy, an African American inventor, created a device that improved Rail Road trains. Share this experience with students by trying to be a Choo train and follow each other without holding on to each other's shoulders. Moving fast is difficult because pieces of the train get lost. Fix the train by holding on and see how fast you can go. Contact_FullName: Tanisha Contact_Email: tish3871@aol.com Area: Black History- Misc Ideas Idea: Rhythms were important for Africans newly taken to America. they provided a secret way for slaves to communicate intentions for flight. Tell your students that drumming can be used for communication. Create rhythms that stand for certain messages. During your work on Black History month, a special set of beats might mean Clean up Time. Also play Follow the Leader in Music Area: you drum a beat and see if students can mimic it. Try selecting different drums and see if the students can discriminate between the different drums. Contact_FullName: Tanisha Contact_Email: tish3871@aol.com Area: Black History-Misc Ideas Idea: Jazz music is the first authentic American music style. Black Americans created this art form. Collect a variety of jazz samples (different eras sound quite different) and listen with the children. Try some Louis Armstrong scatting, and have children sing Greg & Steve's Scat Like That. Contact_FullName: Barbara Contact_Email: braspberry@richlandone.org Area: Black History Idea: One approach to teaching Black History is to highlight famous African Americans. I highlight the author and illustrator, Donald Crews. Mr. Crews has written many age appropriate books: Big mama's, Truck, Lights, Carousel, The Shortcut, etc. Your children can compose a list of similarities and differences in the books such as characters and settings. Children can also recreate illustrations. We recreated the cover from his book Lights, by letting the children cut and paste yellow squares on a black background. We made a carousel by hot gluing four straws around the edge of a paper plate. We glued another palate on top. Then the children choose a paper animal to attach to the straw. 2-16-00Get a list of African American inventers and what they invented and talk about it with children then have the children make a collage of things African Americans invented. Have ice cream for a snack, since an African American was the first to make ice cream. Also peanut butter.
