Idea:

The Cha-nu-ki-ah

How many candles,

How many candles,

How many candles do we light.

On our chanukiah,

On our chanukiah

The first Hanukkah night?

One, one, one, one, one, one

One candle burning,

One candle burning

The first Hanukkah night.

You continue singing the first verse adding: second-two, third-three, fourth-four, fifth-five, sixth-six, seventh-seven, and end with eighth-eight.

Idea:

Divide your class up into 3 groups...It may work best if the children are seated in a circle and #1s are seated together, #2s, etc.

This is a way to introduce the word Hanukah.... #1s say, Ha Ha Ha

teacher raises her hand for them to stop speaking #2s say Nu Nu Nu Nu....teacher raises her hands

#3s say Ka Ka Ka Ka....back to #1s

ask the children, what holiday are we talking about? Until someone says, "I Know, It's Hanukah!!!"

I'm a little latke, round and brown,
Here is my upside, here is my down.
When I am all ready, take a bite,
And eat me up on Hanukkah night.

Tune: I'm a little teapot

I wish I were a Macabee so brave, so strong, so bold.

I'd fight, I'd win each fight I'm in but I'm only 3 (4) years old.

LATKES AND APPLESAUCE (tune: Down by the Station)

Latkes and applesauce in my tummy.
Latkes and applesauce, yummy, yummy, yummy! (rub tummy)
I open up my mouth and gobble, gobble, gobble. (pretend to put food in mouth with both hands)
I eat so much that I can only wobble! (hold arms out from body and wobble side to side)

(Ask the children for their favorite foods. Substitute those for latkes and applesauce in the song.)

Sung to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad"

I've been lighting all the candles
On this Hanukah night.
I've been lighting all the candles
Just to see them shining bright.
Flicker, flicker little candle
Fill me with your glow
Now the time has come to count them
Ready set let's go!

(Count candles)

"Latkes" (sung to the theme song for the Flintstone's cartoon)

Latkes, eat some latkes, They're a Hanukkah delicacy.

Eaten with sour cream, or applesauce is real fancy.

Fried in olive oil just right, reminds us of the miracle of light

Latkes, eat some latkes, they're a Hanukkah del-, Hanukkah del, Hanukkah delicacy.

Hanukkah Lights (sung to 6 Little Ducks)

Nine little candles in my Hanukkah light,
Burning brightly throughout the night.
But one little candle is taller than the rest,
We call that candle the Shamash.

We light the candles one by one,
We play with dreidels and have some fun.
We dance the hora and tell the story,
Of Judah Maccabbee and his glory.

Dreidel Song

I have a little dreidel, I made it out of clay, And when it's dry and ready, Oh, dreidel I will play.

Oh, Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay; And when it's dry and ready, Then dreidel I shall play.

It has a lovely body, With legs so short and thin, And when it gets all tired, It drops and then I win. Oh, dreidel, dreidel, dreidel, I made it out of clay, And when it's dry and ready, Then dreidel I shall play

Magic Dreidel

Using masking tape create the outline of a Dreidel on the floor. This is the "magic Dreidel." Invite the children to step inside the "magic Dreidel." Once inside sing the song that follows. Children can stand inside the Dreidel individually or in groups. Either the teacher can pick the activity done inside the Dreidel or the children can.

Magic Dreidel Song (Tune is a variation of "Little Red Wagon")

Jump inside the magic Dreidel, Jump inside the magic Dreidel, Jump inside the magic Dreidel, Jump jump jump jump Jump, jump jump.

Actions can be changed to hop, shake, tap, clap, spin, bow, run, smile, sit....

I Am A Blue Dreidel (Act out with children)

I am a blue dreidel wound up tight!

I whirl and whirl with all my might!

And now the whirls are out of me.

So I'll rest quietly as can be!

Spin The Dreidel  Sung to Row ,Row ,Row ,Your Boat

Spin, spin, spin the dreidel

Spin it round and round

Wait to see what letter comes up

And the prize which you have found.

Hanukkah's A Happy Time  Sung to Mary Had A Little Lamb

Hanukkah's a happy time, happy time, happy time.

Hanukkah's a happy time,

The festival of lights.
