Idea:

I give the children dreidles of all different shapes and sizes. We count them, and sort them by size and color! Great use of different math skills!

Idea:

I let the children peel and grate potatoes in bowls placed in the empty sand table. Then they can mix and pour and pretend to cook latkes. This is a process activity which culminates in our serving them already prepared latkes. They really have a good time.

Idea:

For a Hanukkah science idea, we do experiments with light and darkness. One thing we do is make shadow puppets. Using poster board, we cut out dreidle and menorah shapes (you could even do Macabbees) and tape them to popsicle sticks. Then we turn off the lights and close the shades to make it as dark as possible in the classroom. We use flashlights on the wall and see the shadows! We talk about how shadows are formed when light cannot pass through something, and how changing the distance between the light and the shape will make the shadow appear smaller or bigger.

Another experiment we do is to show how light travels in a straight line until it hits an object. Take a mirror, a flashlight, and a piece of white paper. Turn off the lights. Shine the flashlight beam at the mirror, and watch how it bounces off and hits the paper at an angle! It's really cool!

Idea:

Another oil and water idea for Hanukkah science that's fun is this: we fill a large jar three-quarters of the way full of water. Then we add enough cooking oil to make a 2 inch layer on top. Next we add three to four tablespoons of salt and watch what happens. The salt takes the oil down through the water, and the oil floats back to the surface in big bubbles when the salt dissolves! Very cool! The kids learn about dissolving and mixing and it ties in to the Hanukkah theme of oil!

Idea:

For Hanukkah, I do experiments with the children involving oil and water. First we try mixing water and juice, and we see they mix easily together. Then in another glass we mix oil and water, and we see they don't mix at all! Then we mix oil, water, and some liquid soap- the soap enables the oil and water to mix together temporarily- this is called an emulsion. The kids love seeing what things mix and what don't, and it ties in to the oil and Hanukkah theme!

Materials; one aprox.12" bar of wood, 10 metal bolts with hole large enough to hold traditional Chanukah candle, 9 Chanukah candles, paints and brushes. To make a menorah take a bar of wood. Have kids paint it. Then glue nine metal bolts on the bar of wood. on the ninth bolt glue an extra bolt to make it higher than the others. The hole of the bolt should be large enough to hold a traditional Chanukah candle. Makes a nice menorah, Happy Chanukah.

idea

Hanukah frames. Cut out a piece of the fun foam (at all craft stores) in the shape of a driedel. Have children decorate the driedel's with paints, glitter, etc. Take a picture of each child and place in the middle of the driedel. To make it a refrigerator magnet add a clothespin and put a magnet on the back. Now your frame also be a memo holder. Melissa, West Orange, NJ

Chanukah reminds us of the miracle of the small jug of oil burning for eight days. for a science activity, i added a few drops of food coloring to water in a bottle and added oil until it was 2/3 full. the children were amazed to see how the oil separates from the water ,even after it was shaken. they've really enjoyed rolling these around, to see what happens.

In preparing for the holidays, please remember the Jewish children. It is often hard for them because they feel some guilt in participating in the Christian celebration. Having a menorah( 8 branch candlestick) in the classroom and placing candles in it helps them feel at home. Spread bread with peanut butter and let children place 8 straight pretzels on it makes a quick and easy snack. Putting tater tots into a toaster oven or microwave, suggests potato latkes, a Chanuka snack. Dreidle is a top like toy that is easy for young children to spin. Use peanuts as prizes. There are lots of books at the library or ask a near-by Temple or Synagogue to send a teacher to help share the holiday.

Candle Sorting

Cut different size candle shapes out of construction paper.  Have the children sort them by size.  You can also, make different colors to sort.
