Idea:

This is great for all ages and especially for school parties.

Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes
1 large box of ice cream cones (cup cones)
1 or 2 cake mixes Depending on how many cupcakes you need.
Prepare cake mix according to package directions. Fill cones ½ full with cake mix. Set the cones upright in a cake pan with sides, so the cones do not tip over. Bake at temperature specified on the cake mix package. The time will be different than with cake pans. Test for doneness, with tooth pick. If the tooth pick comes out clean, they are done. Cool completely, then decorate.

Idea:

I work with 2 and 3 year olds and for our birthday board we used blue boarder with yellow stars. We cut out letters, " A star is born" and cut out larger stars adding the childs picture in the middle of the star with the name at the top, and the birthday below. It's really cute!

Idea:

Give the children playdough, muffin pans, cupcake liners, colored beads and birthday candles. They will make birthday cupcakes over and over. Have them count the number of candles that they put on their cupcakes to teach one to one correspondence and sing "happy birthday" to each other.

party hats:

I cut out triangle shapes like for a hat. Give the kids markers, crayons, glitter, confetti, tissue paper, etc to let the kids decorate how they want to. add a large pom pom at the top and once they are dry, staple a strip of paper a size to fit around their heads and they have a b-day hat!

Birthday Box Sort - Today you can now buy heavy duty pre-decorated gift boxes. Buy an assortment in varying sizes and designs and it will provide your kids with a wonderful opportunity to match tops to bottoms, as well as sort by size. You can also extend to have them order them from big to small or reverse. Our guys love it! Mostly when they have some small item to put inside.

Idea:

We make a piñata to go with our birthday "celebrations" unit (we learn about different days families celebrate, like birthdays, weddings, birth of a baby, winning awards, etc.) Everyone helps to make the piñata, which takes several days (done in stages). Then we have an "everybody's birthday" party on the final day of this section of the unit! We even bake our own birthday cake. Lots of fun!

Idea:

Feed the bear: (play just like Pin the tail on the donkey)

Preparation:
Draw a teddy bear on a large piece of bulletin board (with a big mouth ready to gobble up the cake.) Use a scarf for a blind fold.

Make each player a wedge of cake out of construction paper, the icing can be different colors. I laminated (mactacked) everything. Use tape or stick tack on the back of the cake pieces.

Play the game: Post the bear on a wall. The kids are blind folded on theri turn, spun around 3 times then try and stick the cake as close to the bears mouth as possible. younger children don't need to be blind folded they have just as much fun just getting the cake to the bear.
We did this activity during the theme "stuffies birthday" and all the kids brought in a special stuffed toy to celebrate the toys birthday.

Idea:

Many birthday parties emphasize the birthday child giving 'goody bags' to everyone in the class. A fun alternative is to make a Wish Book for the birthday child. Each classmate writes or draws something special about the child and a wish for him or her. Contact paper can laminate the pages to ensure durability. Then you assemble the pages together and the class presents it to the birthday child as a gift from the class. While the class is working on it, the birthday child can be working on a thank you picture/card for the class who is making the Wish Book! It encourages literacy and gives the birthday child a great keepsake!

Idea:

We did a backwards birthday party. We had cupcakes done up in ice cream cones. We did up real cupcakes and turned them upside down and put a candle in each one (in the bottom when the cupcake is turned over). All the balloons and streamers were on the floor. The chairs were turned the other direction instead of under the table. Did what I call an opened pinata. You do only one layer of the paper and it will crack (normally do 3 layers over lapping and allowing to dry). Then you hot glue candy on the outside of the pinta.

We dressed backwards, if you put your shirt inside out, your earring on backwards, socks inside out and so on.

I have a special cake that the children can put candles in on their birthday. Instead of lighting the candles and plowing them out, we sing happy birthday and the birthday child blows bubbles from a special bubble container I use only for birthdays.

At recess have the kids make kick the can ice-cream. When you have art they make party hats (cut a large circle in half which makes 2 hats.) Give the kids a cupcake and a small cup of candy each. Let them decorate their cupcake and ice-cream. Play a game. Buy dridd fabric crayons and a tee-shirt for the birthday child. Have each child sign the shirt. (You must iron it on but you don't need special paper, just write names on plain notebook paper, lay crayon side down on shirt and iron it on.)

Best Wishes- In my class we pass around a special "wishing candle..." Unlit,  of course. This can be as fancy as you wish to make it. Mine has glittery birthday confetti glued on. We sit in a circle and each child, parent, or teacher makes a special wish for the child's next year, while holding the candle. It's fun to do and often is funny or touching to hear what the little ones come up with. I've had great success doing this with Pre-K and Kindergarten. A variation is to let each person make a wish for the birthday child as she/he gets their snack - which is passed out by the birthday child.
