I deck the kids out in latex gloves and pair them up with a garbage sack for a "trash walk". I try to walk ahead and then the kids point out the garbage and I pick it up and put it in their sack. We just go around one block but is is amazing how fast the bag fills with paper cups, candy wrappers etc. The kids then see what a difference "just one piece" of trash makes.

Our Earth Day study begins with a walk around our school grounds, a story, and a discussion to find out what we know and what we do not know about the R's. We have an activity day centered around Earth Day. The following list are some of the activities that I've tried over the years: recycle newspaper to make paper, plant seeds, recycle paper bags to make vests, write a letter to a government official about the three R's (recycle, reduce, reuse), make collages/posters/banners, tye-dye t-shirts (we also wear these shirts on our field trips), design a postage stamp in honor of our earth. I choose 4 or 5 of these activities as centers. Parent volunteers help at each center. It's a wonderful time!

Give each child a bag and go on a walk to help clean up the Earth. This gives children a good feeling when they learn that they are a part of keeping our Earth beautiful.
