I staple a long piece of construction paper to them to fit around child's head and we where them at our cinco de mayo celebration. I let the kids break a piñata. We play games like "hot pepper" instead of "hot potato". I decorate paper towel rolls really bright and festive and make bean bags with festive material and let the children throw and knock them over. In the past we have even made festive instruments and had a little parade! They have a blast! We then glus them to a piece of white construction paper to make it look like the Mexican flag. I then let them color a copied symbol that is on the flag and they glue to the flag. Looks really nice along with all the other decorations for this holiday. Twisty tie or pipe cleaner the center. Turn the entire project 1/4 turn so one of the folded sides is facing you. Pull each end of the tissue paper gently up so they're all in the middle. Shape each paper as you go. It looks like a pretty flower. Options: We got so good, we left some paper down like a lily, or we cut the edges so they were different. We added more pipe cleaner for a stem and leaves. We used the same idea with white tissue paper to make butterflies with antennae and colored them with markers. We stuffed a water balloon with 5 small beans, blew it up, then taped it to the top of a Popsicle stick. Next, we mixed Elmer's glue with flour and water until the paste is runny. Next we ripped newspaper into short, thin strips. We dipped the newspaper into the paste and spread it on the balloon until it was covered. Make sure to reinforce the area well where the balloon and Popsicle stick meet. We let them dry and painted them with water colors. The children can then use their maracas while singing Cinco de Mayo songs. Date: 3-11-00Make 4 colored peppers. yellow, green, red, and orange. punch holes in these peppers and have children lace them onto string. They can be hung in the center or at home outside the door. They hang these peppers outside their doors in Mexico. (real ones)
Date: 11-7-98Cinco De Mayo is the perfect time to make a piñata. In the past, I have done a simple paper lunch bag, stuffed with paper, and glue crepe paper or tissue onto it for whatever animal or figure you would be creating. We did a bird, and just attached the head and beak made of construction paper. Then attach streamers for decoration, and don't forget a string so it can hang.
