Contact_FullName: Contact_Email: Area: Quilting Idea: You can read Sweet Clara and the Freedom quilt during black history month. The children can each decorate a piece of fabric with fabric paint etc. Older preschoolers can help piece them together to make a class quilt. Contact_FullName: Lois Contact_Email: loisdefrancis@yahoo.com Area: Black History Idea: Benjamin Banneker invented the Grandfather clock. I teach Pre-K and we use a shoe box wrapped in brown paper and standing tall to make a clock. For the clock face have the students type out the numbers on the computer, print them out, cut out the numbers and glue onto a paper plate. You can use pipe cleaners for the hands. They are very cute. "Payless" will donate shoeboxes. Contact_FullName: Nazima Contact_Email: NazimaK9@aol.com Area: Black History month Idea: For Black History month to raise awareness of a multicultural society we asked the children to paint a picture of themselves using realistic colors e.g. shades of browns, pinks etc... We will display these in the hall with a border of hand prints!! Contact_FullName: Kimberly Contact_Email: kimberlyallboys Area: Black History Art project Idea: Discuss George Washington Carver for inventing peanut butter. Then take a hard shell peanut. Let the (s) pick out some google eyes to glue on the peanut. Then assist them to poke yarn (color of their choice) on both sides of the peanut for the arms and then on the bottom for the legs. Then poke yarn in the top to make a nutty necklace. We made these last year during our peanut month theme and they were the biggest hit in the school. Contact_FullName: Dee Contact_Email: Misssade@aol.com Area: Black History Idea: First I take out several books on different African Americans inventors. I try to relate each inventor with an art project for young children to better understand their inventions. Example: Garrett Morgan-Make traffic lights with the children.....Jackie Robison-I play baseball in the classroom and children cut out baseballs and bats and color......George Washington carver-Children collage pre-cut peanuts with peanut shells...Children have fun shelling peanuts (sorting shells and peanuts)......Benjamin Banneker.....Children are given circles and they can write numbers on it while looking at a clock....So many things can be done.....look up different inventors and be creative.
