This is very simple but the children love it. The element of surprise is what makes this simple chant so fun for the children. Recite this in your spookiest voice.

Ghost Chant (recite very quietly)

Ghost so scary.
Ghost so white
Don't scare (child's name)! (Shout the name.)
On Halloween night.

We're Not Afraid

Sung to: "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"

Ghosts and goblins, cats and bats,

We're not afraid of this or that.

They are only make-believe,

Funny costumes on Halloween.

Ghosts and goblins, cats and bats,

We're not afraid of this or that.

Song Title: Halloween Surprise

Sung to: Sing a Song of Sixpence

First you take a pumpkin
Big and fat and round
Then you cut the top off
That will make a hat
Then you hollow out the
Nose and mouth and eyes
Now you have a Jack-O-Lantern

On Halloween (poem0

To scare some folks on Halloween, I'll tell you what I'll do.
I'll hide behind this pumpkin face, and then I'll yell . . .Boo!

I've used this with EEN early childhood students and they really enjoyed it. Make a large jack-o-lantern out of construction paper and glue to a large craft stick. Allow each child to have a turn hiding behind the "mask" as the class recites the poem.

The Pumpkins are Here - (sung to: "The Farmer in the Dell").

The pumpkins are here, the pumpkins are there. The pumpkins, the pumpkins are everywhere.

The pumpkins are up; the pumpkins are down. The pumpkins, the pumpkins are all around.

The pumpkins are in; the pumpkins are out. The pumpkins, the pumpkins are all about.

The pumpkins are low; the pumpkins are high. The pumpkins, the pumpkins all say, "Good-bye".

Cut out pumpkin shapes (add faces if you wish) and glue to popsicle sticks. Let the children use these as props when you sing this song. My son brought this home from his 3 year preschool. He really enjoys singing this song!

Jack-o-lantern, jack-o-lantern,
You are such a funny sight,
As you sit there in the window
Looking out at the night.

Once you were a yellow pumpkin,
Growing on a sturdy vine,
Now you are a jack-o-lantern,
Let the candle light shine.

Three Little Witches

One little, two little, three little witches. (Hold up 1,2,3 fingers)
Fly over haystacks, fly over ditches. (Make flying motion with hands)
Fly over moonbeams without any hitches. (Make flying motion with opposite hand.)
Hey, Ho, Halloween Night! (Clap)

One little, two little, three little witches. (Hold up 1,2,3 fingers)
Fly over barb wire and tore there britches. (Make flying motion with one hand, then turn and show your "torn britches")
Had to go home and get some stitches. (Pretend to sew)
Hey, Ho, Halloween Night! (Clap)

Three Little Ghosts

Three little ghosts on Halloween night; saw a witch and freaked in freight.
The witch just laughed and shouted BOO.
One ghost ran home and then there were two.
Two little ghost who shiver and shook, with every single step they took;
When the door opened wide "A scary goblin stood inside"
One ghost said to the other "I'm going home and stay with my mother."
One little ghost can't have much fun, so he ran home , then there were none.

This is a fun and scary one I use. The children ask me to start singing it around the middle of September.

It's Halloween The lamp is lit around the fire we children sit telling ghost stories bit by bit Till sister Jane says SHHHHH. (Verse gradually gets louder as you get near Sister Jane and then SHHH quiets every one.)

What's that creeping round the kitchen door, What's that creeping round the kitchen floor What's that screaming to the break of day...... (Pause then) IT'S A GOBLIN!

We are jack-o-lanterns big & round, sitting on the ground.

This is a variance to the "Five Little Pumpkins" Song, for those centers that don't celebrate Halloween.

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate (five fingers up)
The first one said "Oh my it's getting Late" (Hands on Cheeks)
The second one said "There's a chill in the air" (arms around self)
The third one said "But we don't care" (swing pointer finger)
The fourth one said "We're ready for some fun!" (hand in air)
The fifth one said "Let's run, run, run!" (running motion)
So woooo went the wind, and out went the lights,
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight!

Another Halloween song. I don't know where I learned it.

(To the tune of 3 green and speckled frogs)

5 crows, all shiny black, Sat on a scarecrow's back, Eating the most delicious corn, CAW! CAW! Scarecrow, he shouted BOO! 1 crow, away she flew, Then there were 4 black shiny crows (just 4!)

Repeat 4 crows, 3 crows, 2 crows, etc. In developmental preschools, you can use two Big Macks, one to record the CAW CAW repeated line and one for the BOO!

My Pre-k class had a blast saying this little verse. They really get into the beat when you snap your fingers along with it. Draw and color a picture of a cat for each of the following colors: green, blue, red, yellow, orange Tell the following story: Scat the Cat

Scat the cat was a black cat. Everyone in his family was black. But Scat the Cat was tired of being like everyone else. So he said (snap fingers) "I'm Scat the Cat I'm Sassy and Fat I change my colors just like that."

So Scat the cat changed into a (name of color). He was as (green as the grass; blue as the sky, red as an apple, yellow as a lemon, orange as an orange,). Scat the Cat enjoyed being a (name of color) for a few days. But then he got tired. So he said: (Repeat Scat the Cat Verse) *After naming last color: Well Scat the Cat had changed his colors many times. He found out that it wasn't so bad being a black cat. So he said, (Repeat verse)

"There was an old witch"

There was an old witch
Believe it if you can
She tapped on the windows and she ran, ran, ran.
She ran helter-skelter
With her toes in the air
Cornstalks flying
From the old witches hair.

"Swish" goes the broomstick
"Meow" goes the cat
"Plop" goes the hoptoad
Sitting on her hat
"Whee!" chuckled I,
"What fun, what fun"
Halloween night
When the witches run.

SHIVERY YELLS (Silver Bells)

We're on sidewalks, we're on porches, dressed in costumes to scare.
Through the city we're ringing your doorbells.
Trick or treating, candy eating, Gooey stuff in our hair.
But the most fun is shrieking out loud,
"Shivery yells, Shivery yells!"
That's the Halloween nitty-gritty.
"Moan and Groan. Leave us alone.
Halloween's just once a year."

FUFUS JACK-O-LANTERN (Frosty the Snowman)

Rufus Jack-o-lantern Was a very scary sight, With triangle eyes, a twisted mouth, And a huge hole for a nose.

Rufus Jack-o-lantern Is a ghost tale so they say, But the children know how the story goes, How he came to scare them one day.

There must have been some magic in the candle mom put in him, For when they struck a match to it, he began to laugh at them.

Rufus Jack-o-lantern Was alive as he could be, and the children say he could scream all day just like any banshee.

Rufus Jack-o-lantern Was a very scary sight, With triangle eyes, a twisted mouth, And a huge hole for a nose.

Rufus Jack-o-lantern Is a ghost tale so they say, But children know how the story goes, How he came to scare them one day.

He chased them down the old graveyard with a broomstick and a mop. He scared them half to death until He came to a sudden stop.

Oh, Rufus Jack-o-lantern His time had come to go. He had to stop his scary chase When his candle would no longer glow.

Thumpity, thump, thump Thumpity, thump, thump Look at Rufus go.

Thumpity, thump, thump Thumpity, thump, thump Watch out or he'll get your TOE!

Five Little Bats

This fingerplay can also be used with bat patterns on Popsicle sticks. I attach the bats on small Popsicle sticks and then use Velcro to attach the bat puppets to a larger stick so they hang upside down. Remove a bat after each verse of the rhyme.

Five little bats hanging upside down. The first little one didn't make a sound. The second one said, "I'll fly far tonight." The third one said, "I don't like sunlight." The fourth one said, "I want to eat some bugs." The fifth one said, "Let me give you a hug." Five little bats hanging upside down. Shhh! It's daytime, don't make a sound!

Looking for a witch,
Out in the night as dark as pitch
You can't see me cause my eyes are green
Black cat Black cat soon it's Halloween!!

Make Blk.const. paper masks attached to a tongue depressor or popsicle stick. I cut out the oval eyes & tiny triangle nose. Kids decorate with sparkely glitter & use at circle time with the chant.

Another chant I use to send children off to line up for hand washing or going outside is:

Ghost so scary,
Ghost so white
Don't scare _________ on Halloween nite!!

Go around the group pointing while repeating chant til you say the name of the child who goes to the line. I usually say this in a whisper to add to the effect.

GREAT PUMPKIN IS COMING TO TOWN (Sung to the tune of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town")

Oh, you'd better not shreik

You'd better not groan

You'd better not howl

You'd better not moan

Great Pumpkin is coming to town.

He's making a list Of folks that he meets

Who deserves tricks

And who deserves treats

Great Pumpkin in coming to town.

He's searching every pumpkin patch

Haunted houses far and near

To see if you've been spreading gloom

Or bringing lots of cheer.

Oh, you'd better not shreik

You'd better not groan

You'd better not howl

You'd better not moan

Great Pumpkin is coming to town.

Friendly Ghost - Song - Sung to Are You Sleeping

I'm a friendly ghost; I'm a friendly ghost
Watch me fly; watch may fly
I can fly right through the air
See how all the people stare
Way up high in the sky

Hinx, Minx, The Old Witch Winks

Hinx, minx, the old witch winks
The fat begins to fry
Nobody's home but Jumping Joan
Father, mother, and I
Stick, stock, stone dead
Blind men can't see
Every knave will have a slave
You and I must be he

I Said My Pajamas

I said my pajamas
I slipped on my prayers
I went up my slippers
I took off my stairs
I turned off the bed
I jumped in the light
The reason for this is
You gave me a fright!

Jack-O-Lantern

I am a pumpkin, big and round (use arms to show size of pumpkin)
Once upon the time I grew on the ground (point to the ground)
Now I have a mouth, two eyes, a nose (point to features on your face)
What are they there for, do you suppose? (Right forefinger to forehead,
thinking gesture)
When I have a candle inside (hold up right forefinger)
Shining bright
I'll be a Jack-O-Lantern on Halloween night! (Thumbs in armpits-bragging

Late On A Dark And Stormy Night

Late on a dark and stormy night
Three witches stirred with all their might
Two little ghosts said, "How do you do?"

Old Roger Is Dead

Old Roger is dead and he lies in his grave
Lies in his grave, lies in his grave
Old Roger is dead and he lies in his grave
Heigh ho, lies in his grave

They planted an Apple tree over his hand
The apples grew ripe and they all tumbled down
There came and old woman a-picking them up
Old Roger got up and he gave her a knock
This made the old woman go hippity-hop

On A Dark, Dark Night

On a dark, dark, night
In a dark, dark wood
In a dark, dark house
In a dark, dark room
In a dark, dark cupboard

When I have a candle inside, shining bright,

I'll be a jack-o-lantern on Halloween night.

To celebrate the first day of fall, we said this rhyme to the rhythm of Ring Around the Rosey:

All the leaves, come here

Summer's gone till next year

Autumn, Autumn

We all fall down!

My students also were assigned autumn colors and then the first line could be changed to:

Yellow leaves, come here

And only those students would join the circle.

Have You Seen.....? (sung to "The Muffin Man")

Have you seen the pumpkin man,

The pumpkin man, the pumkin man

Have you seen the pumpkin man,

Who lives in the pumpkin patch?

Have you seen the old black witch,

The old black witch, the old black witch,

Have you seen the old black witch,

Who lives in the haunted house?

Have you seen the scary ghost,

The scary ghost, the scary ghost,

Have you seen the scary ghost,

Who lives in the old ghost town?

Have you seen the big black bat,

The big black bat, the big black bat,

Have you seen the big black bat,

Who lives in the cold dark cave?

Yes, we have. We've seen these things,
