Finger Paint Pumpkins

Materials: fingerpaint paper, orange food coloring, condensed milk Ahead of time draw a pumpkin shape on the fingerpaint paper, mix the orange food coloring with the condensed milk. Allow the children to finger paint the pumpkin on their paper. The finish results of this is amazing. The have a different texture than regular paint and the kids love the fact that it's shiny.

Spider Webs

Using name brand "Tacky Glue" put the glue all over Wax paper (you may want to help younger children because the glue is thick and hard to squeeze out). We then cover ours in black and orange glitter, but you could probably use any kind of decorative covering (torn up black paper, cotton balls, ect). Let dry completely for at least 24 hours. Carefully peel "spider webs" off of wax paper. You will have free standing spider webs that you can hang from the ceiling or in a window.

Little Monsters...

My home preschool group made these little monsters and each came out unique. We started with a squirt of paint on a plain piece of paper, then we took a fat straw cut in half and the kids blew the paint causing the paint to spread. The kids chose different colors and some did it once and others did it up to 5 times. Most turned out to be round like formations. After the paint dried they glued on eyes and feathers of choice. Looks good on black paper. This is an easy project with great results.

Snow Jack-O-Lanterns. Our Valdez, Alaska preschool quite often has well over a foot of snow by Halloween. Since most outdoor activities are difficult we adapt. We made big round snowballs, then used watered down tempra paint in pray bottles to paint them orange. We then used black tempra paint to make faces. This was a lot of fun and our art work lasted for parents to see when they picked up their children.

Paper Plate Masks 1. Cut a sturdy paper plate in half. 2. Staple a tongue depressor to the bottom right hand corner. 3. Cut a slot in the middle of the half plate to look through.

Present a smorgasbord of materials for the children to glue onto their mask. Mine consisted of feathers...wood shavings dyed range....yarn pieces....shiny papers....buttons... egg carton bumps... green Styrofoam pieces and brown curly nesting material. After the children glued these things onto their masks they could hold them up to their face Mardi Gras style. (<:)

For a classroom or hallway decoration, you cut out 2 pumpkin shapes out of poster board. Cut a door in top one, open door and glue 2 shapes together. Cut out pumpkin seed shapes out of paper or poster board and write every child's name on separate seed and glue to 2nd sheet behind door. Then attach poem: Teacher, teacher, preschool teacher had a class that couldn't be neater. She stuck them in a pumpkin shell and there she left them very well.

First, we read the nursery rhyme Little Miss Muffet. Then we made spiders. The body and legs were made from black construction paper. Where the spiders body is we glued white paper and wrote, "I'm scared of_______." The children wrote what they were scared of. On the bulletin board we put Little Miss Muffet making a scared face. She is saying "I'm scared of spiders what is K119 scared of?" Display the spiders all around the bulletin board. For border we cut out white jagged paper and made spider prints using black paint and our thumbs. Then we drew legs with a black marker.

Halloween COLORS

Our program is a High/Scope program so we do not provide ideas for children for a completed project. That is left up to them. However, our parents still like to take home seasonal art work. Our way to make this happen is to see out materials in seasonal colors.

MARBLE PAINTING We provide black and orange construction paper, thick orange, black, and white tempera paint in a shallow dish, shallow boxes (Lids from boxes for photocopy paper work great.) The child puts his chosen paper (orange or black) in the shallow box. He then dips his marble in the chosen paint color and uses a spoon to scoop it out and onto the paper. He now holds the box tilting it back and forth as the marble moves across. When there is no more paint, he can dip the marble again or get a marble in a different color. These are very dramatic to hang up on display.

Variation: String painting. Child folds paper in half. Then unfolds it and puts a string with paint on it on one side and folds it over. He then pulls the string out from the edge. Interesting designs.

You can make several different Halloween objects by simply painting your child's hands. First there is a bat. You paint both of the child's hands black with a washable paint. Then you have the child put their thumbs together the the other fingers spread out. And carefully place them on the paper. (for younger child you may want to do one hand at a time. The next one is a ghost. Paint one of the child's hands with white washable paint. Have the child straighten their fingers together and print on black paper. (make sure you push down on the child's hand to assure good printing quality.)

Paper bag pumpkin. Take a lunch bag size paper bag and crumble-up some paper to put inside. Tie the top with string leaving about 2 inches of space at top. Paint the bottom portion with orange tempra paint and the top brown (for the stem). Copy a leaf pattern on green paper and let them cut it out-glue or staple it to base of stem. If you'd like, you can wrap green or brown pipe cleaners around stem for vines. Also, you can give them different pieces of tiny black shapes to glue on to make a jack-o-lantern.

For a three dimension and a beautiful mask you can blow up a balloon( medium size) and cover the balloon with paper mache. After when balloon is fully covered have children decide what they what the head to be. You can also introduce Mexican/African/Chinese cultures that celebrates the art of mask making. have children's paint the mask and decorate it with yarn, beads, glitter and sequins. When project is done than you have to pop the balloon. The mask would remain in the same form because of the paper mache. This project can take about a week or more. It can be very messy also. I have done this project with children ranging from 4- 18 years.

Here is a fun idea that I used with the two-year-olds in my Mommy and Me class.
First, go out and buy several packages of WHITE dryer hoses.  The kind that goes from your dryer to the vent outside.  Count out 9 rings on the dryer hose and cut it with a strong pair of scissors.  Fold the cut dryer hose around so it looks like a pumpkin and staple the two ends together.  Let the children paint their pumpkins with orange paint.  Finally, make a stem from rolled up brown paper bags.  HAVE FUN!

Spiderwebs: Cut black construction paper to fit inside a round cake pan (or you can use a square or rectangle pan and cut a circle out later). Place the paper in the pan. Dip a marble in white paint and place in the pan. Let the children tip the pan back and forth so that the marble rolls, making a paint trail that looks like a web. You can sprinkle with glitter while the paint is wet. My preschoolers loved making these. We also glued a plastic spider to the webs. Great for Halloween or an insect theme.

Stained glass jack - o - lanterns

To make these beautiful jack - o - lanterns, stretch a wire hanger to make a circle, push down the wire so it will lay flat on a surface (do this ahead of time). Place the hanger onto one side of a regular full size sheet of orange tissue paper, assist children in painting glue (with a small brush) along the inside and outside edge of the hanger, using black paper add facial features & glue them on, fold the tissue half that is remaining over the glue and press to adhere the edges. I add a green strip with the child's name at the hook part of the hanger and hang them in the windows!! Trust me, the families love them & if you suggest they store them in a shirt or pizza box, parents can enjoy them every year!

Here's a fun art activity I do before Halloween. I only do this with 2 children at a time during center time. Have children take off one shoe and sock. One child sits in the chair and the other child paints the bottom of that child's foot with white paint. When the bottom of the foot is covered, have the child stamp is foot down on a piece of black construction paper. Have a tub of warm soapy water nearby and a towel for the child to wash his/her foot off. Then the children switch. When the pictures dry, I let the children put two stickers on for eyes (or holes punched from a hole puncher or googly eyes). The heel part of the footprint is the ghost's head. It's really cute and it's such an unusual art project that my kids remember it for the whole year!
