Create a unique math area by making a few "recycle bins" complete with paper items, plastic items, and aluminum. They will learn discrimination as well as counting and sorting.

For recycling, we had a hard time finding math ideas, so I invented a type of patterning game using pop tabs. Simply glue 4 pop tabs onto a stiff card, like a cue card, in different patterns, and ask the children to copy it using extra tabs provided. Extra fun was when the children switched around cards to try different patterns. I also encouraged the children to make their own patterns, and to copy each others. Another method to do this would be with multicolored pop bottle lids.
